Dual Graphics Card Install

I've never tried to run dual Graphics Card but with my latest issue with installing one 4k monitor with two 1080p monitors I think that I need to. I'm currently experiencing slight dimness occasionally. I was going.to keep the one o have in there which is ASUS GeForce GTX 1080 8GB Turbo Graphic Card TURBO and plug the two 1080p monitors into the old card and the 4k into ASUS GeForce GTX 1080 TI 11GB GDDR5X Founders Edition VR Ready 5K HD . My question is... They're both same brand ... But can I run two different cards in an SLI configuration?

I'm confused by your question.

SLI is using identical graphics cards as a single graphics device for increased performance at high resolutions. It requires a hardware connection between the cards. nVidia used to support several cards (4?) for that, but I vaguely recall that current drivers limit it to 2.

It's permitted to use cards from different manufactueres in SLI. However, the 1080 and the 1080ti use different processors, so I doubt that they can be combined.

It's not clear to me that you want SLI at all. If I understand your post (doubtful), you wish to use a dual graphics card setup, where the cards are used separately. I have never done that, so I won't attempt to advise you on that.

The main reason I've embarked down this route is I recenlty purchased a 4k Monitor and I'm noticing some slight dimness in that is very random on the 1080p monitors. Twice the 4k blacked out for a second. I can't seem to screen record it with software nor can I record it on say a cell phone device to show.

My immediate thought was either the card is showing signs of failure, or can't support the output resolutions with the introduction of the 4k since that is exactly when I noticed the issues. To troubleshoot, I've swapped monitors and cables. Currenlty the three monitor setup is as follows ... the 4k is attached the supplied HDMI cable from Samsung, the other 1080p monitors are connected via one an HDMI and the other a Display port. Somone recenlty instructed me that that is the issue, so I ordered an HDMI to Display port cable to try that configuration. I've tried both drivers supported for the card from Nvidia being the Game driver and studio driver. Mind you this is strictly a studio computer and not used for gaming. I've tried a repair install of windows thinking maybe something with the configuration? I've also ensure all three monitors are on the same refresh rate (60) So I'm kind of just running out of options and I don't think the card is truly failing since it worked fine up until the introduction of the 4k monitor. So... I thought I would harness the power of two cards and instead of purchasing the same card which is just older, I thought I could upgrade a bit and plug the 4k into that higher end card. Just forgive me that this part of building computers I've never really ventured into so. I primarily use the machine for photo editing, video work\animation and graphic design.

I would sell the old cards as second-hand and buy a new more powerful card. It might also be that your PSU cannot provide enough power for all cards. Consider to also upgrade your PSU.

The GTX 1080 cards aren't weak. They're just one generation back from nVidia's latest.
