OK, I'll ask a neighbor to let me hook up to his computer. This might take a while as he's on vacation. Please stay tuned and I'll post the result.
PS: There must be a driver for the GPU. Where would I find that in Device Manager? Also, is there any other way to test the GPU?

Quite likely to be a problem with the HDMI plugs and sockets possibly the HDMI cable.
Check sockets on laptop and monitor for damage. Similarly with the HDMI cable and plugs.
These are very small these days and you will need a suitable magnifying glass and light.
Nothing wrong with the driver and GPU as the internal screen works.
One of my methods is to very gently wiggle the suspect areas.
