New Graphic Card (GTX 1070) doesnt perform good with newest driver

    Hi there,
I recently got a used GTX 1070 graphics card and installed it in the PC. I also paid attention to all specifications and downloaded the latest drivers.
So far everything worked, but now I have a much lower framerate than with the GTX 960 that I had previously installed.
For comparison: I work a lot with the Unreal Engine and previously I had on average around 90 FPS. With the new 1070 I can bearly reach 80 FPS.
Same thing for games, including Virtual Reality, do not run as smoothly as I would expect from a 1070.

Apart from the low performance, there are no other problems. The power supply (630 W) shouldn't cause any trouble, the board is also strong enough and I am using the newest Windows 10 version. I also had a 1070 installed in the same PC for a short time 2 years ago and everything worked at that time.

However, I found that when I install the old driver version (368.00) that was included on a CD, all games and programs now run smoothly as I would expect from the card. So I think the problem is not the card itself but probably my software. Unfortunately I can not use this old version without problems, since programs like Chrome require a newer version to work properly. Otherwise, videos, for example, simply freeze.

I have also tried to update all drivers, run DDU over it, use older drivers (but they are either too old or have the same problem) or adjust the graphics card settings - all without success.

If anyone can give me a tip here, I would be really grateful for it. Otherwise, I'm afraid that I have to switch to AMD and hopefully this driver and card would work.

Thank you for any help! :)

Have you tried DDU (display driver uninstaller, Official Display Driver Uninstaller DDU Download)

If that doesn't help, you may benefit from a clean install of Windows 10. With suitable preparations, that shouldn't take more than a few hours. :-(

Maybe some setting changed was added inside nVidia's control panel...

You could also try gpu-z to check bus speeds and other info.

    Try the following :

1 - Update your mother board bios to latest even if it was on latest and chose to discard/clear user data

    2 - Right click desktop

    3 - Choose : Nvidia Control Panel

7 - Then find OpenGL Rendering GPU and switch from Auto to : GTX 1070

8 - Then lastly find Cuda - GPUs switch one time to : non then another time to : GTX 1070 which will resolve to all to refresh it

9 - Hit Apply and refire the app in question to test and report back

I have found that latest nVidia driver performs worse than the previous one. It could be my imagination but I swear nVidia releases are just hit & miss. You get one good, then you get one bad...

You could try installing the previous nVidia driver (not the old one). Or check again if nVidia has given a newer and better driver. Also you could use Geforce Experience to fine-tune the performance of your game.

Thank you all for your help.
I tried every single advice including resetting the pc but so far nothing seemed to work for me. I also tested this card with directX and Furmark but the card itself still seems to be fine. Only in Action this card runs worse than my GTX 960 (which doesnt have any issues).

I am currently thinking about selling the 1070 and try the AMD Vega 56. Hopefully another card / driver wouldnt be affected.

But if someone has another idea I would love to hear it.

1)The problem maybe is the CPU. When the CPU bottleneck this card, the 1070 loads only 60-70% and the games stutters.
This card need a i7 like 4790(4 cores-8 threads). For example 64 people multiplayer with your CPU the bfv is unplayable.
Your CPU is low end for today's standards with only 4 cores.
I have seen it in Maxwell architecture where a gtx970 and gtx980 in games , have worse fps that a gtx960 when the 3d load is low.

2)Also another reason maybe the psu.
It is the thermal-take berlin? 630w?
This psu does not have a quick transient response time to run a 1070. Vega is more demanding that this.

you can try GPUz , it can tell if the card is fake , fake cards are old gpus that were hardware manipulated to reflect different more advanced cards thankfully GPUz can tell them because usually their properties / speed don't match ranges of the original .

Ok guys, I found the issue(s).
There was actually no problem with the graphic card but two seperate issues.
The first one and the reason I couldnt play VR smoothly was the connection between the headset and Pc. My USB port was damaged and I had to renew it. After doing so VR games worked perfectly fine.
The second problem had to do with raytracing. The old 960 didnt had this feature but the new GTX 1070 does and all the settings were activated. By disabling it I increased my performance a lot (From 14 ms to 2,73 ms).

Thanks for all the help, without it I could never have narrowed the problem so far and would probably have given up long ago!
