    nVidia driver not installing

    Hi,

I am new in this forum. I have just registered because I am trying to work out a problem and need some help.

I have recently re-installed my PC completely. It is now running on 64bit Windows 10, version 1909 (Build 18363.535).
The PC includes an nVidia card GeForce GTX 980 Ti).

What I am trying to do, is to install the last nVidia driver that still supports 3D Vision, namely the 425.31 64bit version.
The problem is that the driver won’t install any more. I used it on the earlier Win10 version I had, but now it stops with this message:

    NVIDIA Installer cannot continue
The Standard NVIDIA graphics driver is not compatible with this version of Windows. Please update your driver using GeForce Experience to download the correct version.

That’s a shame, because I have several 3D movies I like to see, and some games as well.

However, I know that some people manged to make it work with my Win10 version.

I’d be happy with any suggestions to remedy this… thanks for reading.

Hello Rome, and welcome to Ten Forums.

You can try installing setup file in compatibility mode from its properties.

I tried this immediately but the result remains the same.

Thx for this, tried it too, FreeBooter; same result.

BTW (forgot to mention this before): Windows Update reports "You're up to date".

Chances are good that if you let Windows Update install drivers during setup it installed the DCH version.
It's likely your 425.31 installer is for the Standard Nvidia driver, which will not install over the DCH version.

You can find out which version you have installed by going to Nv control panel and checking system information.

The only way to fix that would be to uninstall the DCH driver with DDU and then install 425.31 offline.
Or go to Nvidia's website and download the DCH version of 425.31 from the advanced driver search.

Also be aware that once you do get the 425.31 driver installed, Windows update will keep trying to overwrite
them with whatever drivers it has available that it decides are newer then what you have currently installed.

Most likely the 432.00 DCH version.

Gotta love the joys of Nvidia and Microsoft.

    peace

Thx Wannagofast, very much so indeed.

DCH & DDU drivers: I wonder what the difference is, or how it relates to my problem at hand!?

But I can investigate this further now.

I recently did a clean install of Windows 10. Windows Update installed 432.00 DCH. The regular ("game ready") drivers won't install over that.

    My solution:

Disable the network adapter in settings. (Or use some other means to prevent Internet access by the PC.)

Run display driver uninstaller. (For me, it hangs the PC at the end of the run. It might not do that if run in Safe Mode. However, it completes the uninstall.)

    Reboot.

    Install the regular nVidia drivers.

    Reconnect to the Net.

The difference is going to be between Standard and DCH Nvidia drivers.

Not to be confused with the program DDU (Display Driver Uninstaller)
This is a program to cleanly and completely uninstall Video (and some Audio) drivers and all references to them.

Difference between them NVIDIA DCH/Standard Display Drivers for Windows 10 FAQ

Nvidia Standard Drivers, DCH Drivers, and Studio drivers have created quite a bit of confusion online.

The FAQ I have linked clears some of it up, and should probably be included in the Nvidia driver sticky.
