Nvidia Control Panel app(?) not working

I decided to update my nvidia drivers, so I downloaded the latest game ready driver package for my gtx 960, used nvslimmer to trim away the stuff I don't want installed, leaving the install core, physX, and the display drivers, updated, and it seems to have went fine

then I get the following error when I right click and use the nvidia control panel context menu option

    "C:\Program Files\WindowsApps\NVIDIACorp.NVIDIAControlPanel_8.1.956.0_x64__56jybvy8sckqj\nvcplui.exe"
The system could not find the filter specified

So I used the steps here to make a backup of the windowsapps folder perms and give myself full unrestricted read/write access, unhide the windowsapps folder, navigate to the folder containing the nvidia control panel, use the nvcplui.exe, and the control panel opens and works just fine

why did nvidia decide to make the control panel a windows app (or a sorta app from what I read up on it), and what must I do to fix the problem I have above

alright, after doing a clean sweep of all things nvidia from my computer, and booting into safemode (minimal) to delete one stubborn folder, I went back into normal boot, and installed the standard version driver of 441.66 from nvidia's older driver archives, and surprise surprise, it brought back the regular non-windows app version control panel

I just swapped an AMD GPU for a NVidia GPU. After driver installation, the PC nagged it could not find NVidia Control Panel but it was then installed automatically as a Windows app after a short delay. All works fine. Have you tried installing the CP from the Windows Store?

Have you tried the Store version. Nvidia provide just the Control Panel bit which is available in the Store.

DCH drivers need the MS Store App, Nvidia Control Panel. Go to the System Requirements of the App.

Standard drivers use the usual Nvidia Control Panel.

I just installed the latest driver for a new GPU (below) which installed the app store version of the NVidia Control Panel. Therr was no mention of it being a DCH driver. Are the new drivers the DCH version which use the store app?

That's the case with me. I reinstalled the machine, downloaded the GF Experience, and downloaded it (DHC), although it wasn't before, so I had to download the control panel from the store.Even if I download it directly from the nvidia website (I can't choose which one I want) it still is. Strange.

If anyone wants Nvidia control panel and don't want to use Microsoft store (don't blame you), or don't have it enabled, or it doesn't work on your machine, you can download it from this link.

    nvidia zipped

I don't have Microsoft store enabled, so to get the Control Panel working with my RTX 2070 drivers I installed it via Store on another machine, extracted it, put a copy of the folder on my machine and started using it. It works OK on my machine.
Nvidia are basically forcing users into using MS apps and technologies (MS store in this case) by making Control Panel install as an appx UWP app when their GPU drivers install. Finding this Control Panel outside of Windows Store is also exceedingly difficult. I disabled that shiite in my custom version of Windows when I set up the config in NTlite when I first made the installer, so I found this was the problem and had to find another way to install the control panel in my machine. Anyway, now you have it.
