    Primary monitor randomly goes black

Got a monitor issue. Looked at other posts about this issue be could not find anything addressing my issue. Over the past few months, my primary monitor randomly (no pattern to the issue) goes black but the led shows it to still be working. Secondary monitor is working. Only way to get the primary back is to reboot the computer. I tried reversing the DVI-D cable but no luck, primary still goes black. Regardless of which monitor is set to primary, that is the monitor that goes black. The monitor set as secondary never goes black. Any ideas?

Do you have another card to give a try? Since we can rule out the monitor due to switching, I'd say that is what to check next. Also, do card and monitors have another another interface? For ex. if they can use HDMI and you have a cable that might be a solution if it's the DVI of your card messing up.

It's possible reinstall the driver might work. Or a driver update might possibly. Doesn't sound like the ol' reseating the card is what's causing this. But I'd rather test hardware before software.

    Hope that helps.

Sounds like either bad drivers or bad cable.

Mustachio, do not have another card but am trying to locate one locally that I could borrow. That is the only interface for the card. I have reinstalled the latest driver update several times but does not resolve the issue

bro67, the issue occurs on either cable. I did order two new cables just to see if I may be an intermittent issue with a cable.

Are you clean installing the drivers? If not, try re-installing and checking the clean install box.

If you really want to clean the drivers out and start fresh, use this: Display Driver Uninstaller Download version 18.0.1.9 Follow the safemode method.

xrobwx, appreciate your suggestion as Windows 10 does my nvida updates. Got it done and will now wait and see if the issue occurs again.

xrobwx, did not fix the issue, when it went black this time, I decide to switch the cables at the back of the computer. bro67's right, is a faulty cable. Apparently the faulty cable has a wire with a loose connection in the back of the molded plug that is connected to the computer. Random movements of either or the cables, the monitor or the tower would sometimes create the issue - most the time it would not. Secured the faulty cable to where it would work but could no longer move. Will replace it tomorrow when the new cable arrives. Thanks guys

Awesome, glad you got it sorted and thanks for reporting back!

Windows is behind on those driver updates, it's better to get them from the manufacturer, in your case, Nvidia.

Hit the Windows key, type device installation, a choice will pop up, Change Device Installations settings, click that and choose no.

It's safe but you will have to grab your own device drivers.
