    Dual Monitor Question

I have a dell xps 15 9550 laptop. I have 2 monitors that i connect to, both are 24' and 1920x1200 resolution. One i connect via hdmi to hdmi. The other i connect via usb-c to hdmi. I have dual monitor setup on this.

The thing is im not in that place now. Im at my other home in another country and i have 1 old monitor that is 1600x1200 monitor. Its the 2007fp 20.1 inch monitor. I bought this monitor a long time ago and it was one of the most popular monitors back then. It uses vga, dvi and thus older cables and not compatible with hdmi. So because of this, i bought a hdmi to dvi cable to have my xps 15 9550 connect to it as external monitor.

This is my old monitor that i have now.

    https://www.amazon.com/Dell-2007FP-Ultrasharp-1600x1200-Height-Adjustable/dp/B000UVDONY/ref=sr_1_5?keywords=dell+1600x1200&qid=1570548468&sr=8-5

If i were to buy a 2nd monitor, and thus have dual monitor here, i have to make sure the 2nd monitor has hdmi right? As of now, my usb-c port is not connected. The hdmi port is used to connect to my dell 20 inch monitor via hdmi to hdmi. So that means if i buy a 2nd monitor, make sure it has hdmi and im good right?

So this means this would work

    https://www.amazon.com/Dell-Computer...s%2C135&sr=8-1

But this won't right? I see it shows 1x display port. Also the upstream/downstream port has nothing to do with connecting from my laptop to the monitor right?

    https://www.amazon.com/Dell-UltraSha...s%2C135&sr=8-4

I want to get a 2nd monitor so i can do a dual monitor setup here temporarily and thus, no big issue with having 1 old monitor that is 20.1 and one that is 24 inch. But i can't have 2 of them same 20.1 inch monitors right like the one i have now since the cables won't work? Or would it work? Thus because its temporary, i don't want to spend a lot on a 2nd monitor if i don't have to. Only requirement for 2nd monitor is 1920 x 1200 resolution. But if me getting a 2nd monitor that is the same as my old one of 1600x1200 if i could get for a low price, i would not mind this either.

Connects directly to the USB-C port.

I took a look at that... resolution doesn't work. Need 1920x1200 or at worst 1600x1200.

As of now i have these cables

hdmi to dvi (currently being used)
    usb c to hdmi
    usb c to dvi

I want to connect a 2nd monitor to my xps 15 9550 and i already used the hdmi port on my laptop. So that mean i have to use usb c to hdmi or usb c to dvi right?

Thus the 2nd monitor... has to have either a hdmi or dvi cable?

Would that mean if i had 2 of these same monitors... the 2007fp which is only 1600x1200... if i had another one of these monitors, i can do dual screen as long as i have the usb-c to dvi port which i already do?

But if i get a 24' screen, as long as the monitor has hdmi or dvi... its fine right? I already have the usb c to hdmi and usb c to dvi cable.

Any HDMI monitor should work with the USB-C to HDMI cable.

One HDMI and one DVI monitor should work, yes.

Okay i think im confusing myself now a bit.

My current setup is hdmi from my laptop to dvi port on the current old monitor.

So now the 2nd monitor... it has to be usb-c from my laptop's end since i already used the 1 hdmi port.

But for the 2nd monitor... it has to have either hdmi or dvi port right? Thus as long as its either of these ports, its fine since i have the 2 other type of cables already?

Also curious but how would one do a triple monitor setup if one chooses to do so?

If the above post is correct, you can use any combination of DVI and HDMI monitors:

    2x HDMI
    1 HDMI + 1 DVI
    2x DVI

If you want triple monitors, you will have to use a docking port:

Okay that makes sense with the dual monitor. Because i have all these cables, i can pick an hdmi or dvi monitor as my 2nd one for this setup.

For the triple monitor okay so i need docking port. But are there laptops or desktops that have say 2 hdmi ports and say 1 or 2 usb c ports? So that way, you only need the cables and not need a docking port if you want 3 monitors?

Also most ppl who have dual monitors dont use a docking port right? Just took a look and it seems some ppl use docking port for 2 monitors... shouldn't that be not necessary as long as you have an hdmi and usb-c port on your laptop? Is it because many laptops only have just one hdmi and no usb-c so thats why they need a docking station for dual monitor?

I do not know of any laptop computer currently available that will support triple monitors using cables only. At least one active adapter must be used.

Standard USB Type A ports do not support video directly. An active USB to video adapter must be used, which is like a miniature graphics card that will require a video driver to work. Not all USB-C ports support video directly either. Lots of laptops support 2 video output sources, and for the third monitor an active USB to video adapter would be required.

Most people who use docking stations for dual monitors on a laptop do so for the convenience of having to plug in only a single USB cable.
