Need someone with old Intel GMA 4500MHD to do a test
You would also need one of those USB video adapters to do this test
Issue:
I have a really old machine with an Intel Mobile GM45 Express chipset and Intel GMA 4500MHD graphics. I use it headless as a simple NAS box and offload a few other tasks to it now and again.
Starting with Windows 10 1809, I could no longer remote desktop to the system - I would just get a black screen. I was able to work around it by simply changing the display driver to the genric Windows display driver. Unfortunately, with Windows 10 1903, that workaround no longer works.
The bottom line is that even though Windows remote desktop uses its own display driver, it still seems to have dependancies upon the installed display driver.
The test:
I can't help but wonder what would happen if one of those USB display adapters were plugged into this system. I'm wondering if anyone with an old system like this who also has a USB display adapter could try plugging one of these into that system, install the drivers, then try to remote desktop to it. It might take a couple of tweaks like disabling the on-bord video temporarily, etc. If that works, it would be an inexpensive way for me to get that system back into service.
