Video System Failing and leaving me with Black Screen

    Hi

I have a video system which is failing. Since Tuesday this week (13th) at random times the screen just goes blank. Today to ensure I got the right event I had to leave it for ten minutes before doing a reset to get my video back. I then searched for an Event 41 and searched back to about the time that the monitor blanked on me.

What I found was an Event ID 4101 with the description "Display driver nvlddmkm stopped responding and has successfully recovered." This was immediately followed by an Event ID 263 with the description "A pointer device has no information about the monitor it is attached to." which I believe MAY be the point at which my video crashed.

The strange thing is that whenever the video crashes I have just got up to do something - this morning it was to fill up a water bottle. Strange but true as I've NEVER been at my PC when it's crashed. This has got me wondering whether something has worked loose. Odd but this is about the ONLY pattern I can fix to this problem.

Problem is: what do I do to fix it. I believe it to be hardware related which involves the monitors (2 off), the graphics card (a GTX760) or the mobo. Is there any way I can tie this down to a particular component, hardware or software?

Any help would be most appreciated thanks.

Have you tried installing older version or newer version of graphic card driver?

    Hi FreeBooter

I put the latest drivers in a few days ago and it made no difference at all. Earlier this afternoon I downgraded my drivers to one that was around back in January this year. So far all is quiet and my PC is behaving itself. However, it is very early days and I have been expecting at least one more failure today although when is anyone's guess. Nevertheless, all is going OK at present thanks. Famous last words???

Latest version of the graphic card driver could be buggy you can try beta version of the drive or wait for newest release.

    Hi FreeBooter

I think I'll stick with what I have installed at the moment. So far no more crashes and I hope it'll continue like that. I'm just a tad twitchy about using a beta version particularly where a fully released driver seems to be so buggy. So, thanks but no thanks.

    Hi all

As of yesterday morning everything seemed to going so well. Then within 75 minutes the video crashed twice. So even the old drivers I downloaded back in January didn't do any good. Anyway, yesterday afternoon I removed my PC to a 'workshop area' and gave the power supply a good clean out so its now cleaner than it has been for many a long year and it is something around 10-15 years old but still doing sterling service. In the process I had to remove my water cooler so that I could remove a connector at the top of the mobo. I therefore went the whole hog and removed the video card as well to give that a bit of a clean. Whether it has done any good remains to be seen. What I can say, however, is that things are somewhat cleaner than they were so we'll just have to wait and see what happens. I have done though ordered a new power supply as the current 8-pin mobo connector is very tight (the connector is at the very top and my power supply is at the bottom so I really need a longer lead). Overall, we'll just have to wait and see what happens. Hopefully things will have been sorted out.
