VGA should work just fine as duplicate display on a t.v.
Might look a little blown up
HDMI will produce better colors and will probably scale better on the t.v.
All cables are not created equal cheap cables are just that and are usually bad quality.

Audio you'll have to double check that connection
PC only has a single port where as a t.v. usually has 2 ports white/ red.

I bought a insignia 2.0 sound bar that came with a splitter to join the two wires into a single wire perfect for pc.

OK I get the idea, VGA does not give the best of resolutions on TVs.

Samuria, I also have hdmi ports on both my pc and tv. For what ever reason on this PC, I had all kinds of problems setting up hdmi. I did finally get it working but I consider it an iffy to use situation. The problem I had at first was when I connected the hdmi to both pc and tv, I could NOT show any application full screen anywhere NOT matter I tried (after a lot of head scratching, I finally got that solved). My understanding is that many people have this problem with Windows 10.

I am not sure why some people have this problem and others do not.

With HDMI issues with TVs it depends on the TV, the manual for the one I'm using as a monitor specifically says use the VGA connector for PC's and HDMI for Blueray / DVD, chaining etc. Which as HDMI in my case was abysmal, I gave up on it and used the adaptor method. Main TV which is new, had no issues with HDMI when I tried it, literally plug and play, PC found it without any intervention from me, curiously it still has a VGA socket as well though.
For what you are intending to do there are two types of HDMI cable, standard which is for lower resolutions and high speed for higher ones which might be another cause of problems some have.

Depends on the computers graphic's abilities and also the scaling ability of both if vga will look okay.
Plus the users eyes whether vga is acceptable or not and one may need to tune the dpi as well to make things a little bigger.

HDMI tends to exaggerate more so tuning maybe needed.

If your PC does 1920x1080 on screen, and your TV can do likewise (most flat screens can), then there will be no degradation.
But I'd still prefer to cast, if only to avoid the cable.

The biggest issue is that sound comes and goes from a different source to the video if you use vga. This makes synchronisation of sound and video very difficult.
