    Unable to reset display settings

A family member recently 'changed something' related to the Windows 10 display settings (don't ask !)
Ever since the PC boots into Windows and shows a black screen.
I'm reasonably technical and have tried some things I've found by searching, but nothing works.
I can boot into Safe Mode with low resolution, but changed display settings are not saved when the PC is rebooted.
System restore points, etc have all failed.
I've connected to alternate monitors and they show 'Out of Range', but again I can do nothing but boot into Safe Mode.

I'd be quite happy doing a regedit if I could find where windows stores the display adapter settings, but so far I've been unable to find where these are stored.

Does anyone know how I can boot into Safe Mode and then update things so when Windows restarts normally it just uses some really basic display adapter settings / low resolution ?
...seems like it should be an easy thing to do but I'm pretty close to just giving up and reinstalling (I really don't want to do this ! )

Black screen is a GPU driver problem not someone messing with settings.

Boot into Safe Mode with Low Resolution. Press the Windows key+X and choose Device Manager. Expand Display, and Right click your display adapter, take note of what it is, and Uninstall it. Now restart in Normal Mode, Windows should load with the Default VGA driver. Then Download the driver from your computer/motherboard/video card manufacturer.

As soon as I read that I realised I should have thought of that. Looks to have done the trick - thank you very much !

Maybe it's because I'm using my phone, but I can't find thread tools anywhere (I used to admin forums so I'm going to blame the software 😆&#128077

This is a related question, I hope. How do I force a VGA driver AL1916w to be used instead of "Generic PnP Monitor" for the Acer external monitor I have? I'm having a hard time using the monitor. When I start the computer, it is detected but shows black. I have to unplug and plug-in the VGA cable about 12 times to get it to work. Maybe the original driver would help

You also need to download the video driver. For this to work for the first time.
The times that I have touched this is to uninstall current driver and install the recent one.

When you say video driver, are you referring to the Display Driver showing in Device Manager? Can you give me some detailed instructions to follow to possibly fix the problem? My external vga Acer monitor does not display until I plug and unplug the monitor 12-15 times.
