Adding a third monitor - 3rd monitor not detected

    Hi there

I was kindly given a monitor from a friend which is nice. Why have two when you have three right? I connected the third monitor fine using an iSolem HMDI splitter I bought from Amazon and it worked first time, however the display detects the displays as 1 2 2 and not 1 2 3.

I tried playing with the settings and extending but it doesn't seem to work and when I try detect, it won't.

    Any advice?

Are all three connected to the splitter?
If only two then probably the splitter is just mirroring one of them .
If you have a vga port or dvi port on your computer you can try to get an adapter dvi-d to hdmi or vaga to hdmi
    and try it that way.

I assume the signal from the splitter is being read as the combined signal, so Windows thinks you have only 1 monitor on it. Both your '2's having the same contents on screen supports this. I'm not familiar with HDMI splitters, so I'll leave it to someone else to comment on that.

When I had 3 monitors around a decade ago, I bought a cheap $50 extra graphics card to handle the 3rd monitor. As long as you're not driving anything too graphical to it, such will do you fine if you can't solve it the splitter way.

    Hi there
usually just using a splitter will just mirror an identical monitor -- also if HDMI sometimes DRM will just blank the signal (HDMI 2.0 and above).

If you need more than two monitors the best way is to use a dedicated GPU card which handles multi monitor setup -- these things are used quite often for example by Stock Exchange traders etc where you might need in real time to be monitoring several different stocks at the same time.

For SE (Stock Trading) trading I use a 4 Monitor setup -- works perfectly. I don't think the standard systems will handle more than 2 monitors without separate GPU card -- even a splitter might require you to use something like an HDMI switcher to switch between the monitors connected to the splitter.

    Cheers

It appears to be a laptop, see picture so add on cards isn't an option.
Make and model of laptop would help so we can see what video ports other than HDMI you may or may not have available.

It's because of the splitter. 2 into 1 does not go. You can't drive two monitors from one port and get two descreet signals. Not from a standard HDMI or DVI port as far as I know. And especially with a passive splitter which is likely what you have.
I run three displays on my desktop, DVI, DVI, HDMI. It works because my video card supports it.
On my laptop I run dual diplays. The second one is DisplayLink (USB). I didn't have to go that way, it just ended up that way. My second display looks like a tablet and connects with just the one USB cable. No second power cable or power supply. And easy to put in my carry bag with my laptop.
You can get DisplayLink adapters that will let you connect an HDMI or DVI monitor to your PC via USB.
