amd radeon hd8240 on W10 SLOWS computer

I have tried everything I can think of to get rid of this file ATIKMDAG.SYS.
BUT it is persistent. It is an AMD file for the HD8240 that consumes TOOOOOOOOOOO much CPU resources and slow the computer, sometimes to a HALT.
I am back at the oldest driver that Windows loads and I thought that this file was just in the later ones. BUT NO, it's back..........
AMDs latest drivers say they work for this device (8240). But if I load them the system stops......then starts.......then stops........CPU usage goes to 100%

the computer is an HP18-5041

Is there a way to prevent any AMD drivers from loading after I uninstall this one? OR run this driver without that file. I thought it was for the installer - which I shouldn't need at this point. It seems to work better that way.

Have you tried the latest drivers that HP lists for the model? (From 2015.)

Probably won't help, but they may be worth a try. I suggest going into Device Manager and deleting the Display Adapter device. You'll see a checkbox to remove the drivers as well. Use it.

I doubt that you want to remove ATIKMDAG.SYS. I believe that it's a fundamental driver file.

First of all, I would remove Internet access from computer. Then I would uninstall AMD driver with https://www.wagnardsoft.com/DDU/down...0v18.0.1.1.exe Then I would try bobkn suggestion (HP website driver) and if it's still failing, I would let Windows Update to find a driver for you.

I used DDU but it came back. I finally deleted/renames all instances of atikmdag.sys.
Running normally now (I think) with an old driver version. I am considering installing the latest driver and again deleting the .sys file. But as slow as this processor is, I don't think it is buying much.
Apparently, this issue happens with a lot of HD8240 GPUs as I found the answer from someone else's identical issue on an Acer. Mine is an HP.

I would not be deleting atikmdag.sys. It seems to be an essential file for video card driver.

Is that a provable fact? So far, it seems to be working without it, but I have not used it much. How can I test it?

Maybe looking at its properties will tell you what it does. It has been a long time since I owned an ATI/AMD card.

Ati is very intrusive . Just because you deleted the file doesn't mean the problem is gone.
Ati embeds itself in several places in the system. especially the registry.
Check the Ati site for a removal tool. They used to have one which would clean all of the drivers
and registry entries. After which you can install the new drivers (bear in mind atikmdag.sys may be
reinstalled as it has been a staple of ati cards since Vista)

THANKS - I used DDU. I backed up the system drive and installed the latest driver supposedly meant for W10 and this GPU - Maybe my rev is a 1 or 2 as it is designated R3 and exhibits the worst stop/start with atikmdag.sys running. With those files (all of them) deleted or renamed it runs normally. The only issue is I can't tweak the driver to reduce brightness or whatever.
Since I must delete that sys file for any driver that gets loaded I may as well use the latest. The MS driver runs OK and I don't remember if the tweaking was available as it didn't give me much chance to try it b4 it updated to an AMD driver. I tried all the changes that were suppose to stop it from doing that, but no go.

Well for tweaking, you might have to use Windows own adjustments.
Otherwise you'll probably need the Catalyst Control Center and I'm not sure if that works
with W10 or not.
