    USB to RGB Monitor Adapter

A friend who thinks I know it all gave me a
Dell Inspiron 15R 5537 i3 Windows 8 laptop to see if I can get it to boot for her.

So far, I've figured out that it's running, but no display.

I tried to hook my Samsung HDMI monitor to it, but no joy. I've looked at Amazon and ran across this:

Amazon.com: HDMI to VGA, Moread Gold-Plated HDMI to VGA Adapter (Male to Female) for Computer, Desktop, Laptop, PC, Monitor, Projector, HDTV, Chromebook, Raspberry Pi, Roku, Xbox and More - Black: Computers Accessories

Is there a possibility I can hook my older RGB monitor to it and get a display?

I would think so, Wynona. RGB being an very early video protocol. Used when monitors weighed roughly 50 lbs and took up half the desk! Have you tried yet?

No, gotta get the adapter first; didn't want to spend the money unless it should work . . . this is the first Lappy I've ever seen that didn't have an RGB port.

If you tried to connect a monitor to the HDMI port and it did not work, then the adapter connected to the same HDMI port will not work either.

I keep saying RGB when I actually mean VGA! Duhhhhhhhhhh!

I want to use either USB to VGA or HDMI to VGA.

Kind of what I was thinking. So, would USB work?

Not likely, the reason being that the USB to VGA adapter would likely require a driver to be loaded to make it work. Does the laptop have a removable battery? If yes, I would recommend removing the battery, unplugging the power adapter, pressing the power button to bleed off residual electricity. With the HDMI monitor plugged in and on, plug the laptop power in and try starting it up, watching for any signs of video life.

    Thanks, I'll do that now.

    No sign of life.

And, from what you've said, Navy, I don't think I'm going to get anywhere with this.

    Doesn't sound like it, unfortunately.
