To get the HDMI out to work on a laptop you may have to toggle it via one of the function keys. Fn and the one with a display symbol on it. It will be one of the F keys. I don't think you have to be logged in for that to work.
Or Press the Windows LOGO key + P press the down arrow once and hit enter. That should put it in duplicate. You may have to be logged in for this to work.

No, Alpha, the screen is completely blank from the time I turn the computer on. So far, I've never gotten anything to show except a black screen.

I'll try what you said in the other post when I pull the computer out of the trash can and put the hard drive back.

Guess I'll have to keep the Dell in my office until everything is totally exhausted.

BTW, the laptop isn't really in the trash can . . . if I don't get it working, it will be donated to Good Will.

Ok, if you could see the POST screen then that would mean it was only a Windows issue. And a reinstall or repair install would likely fix it.
No post means its ether the display or display driver board. If it's the display driver board what i sujested likely won't work.
It could also be a motherboard fault thats preventing it from POSTing. Any Beeps during power on?

No beeps, Alpha. It's been a long time since I've heard anything out of POST; I think they come without POST enabled nowadays.

Anything and everything's worth a try.

I can't remeber if my laptop Beeps but my two desktop PC's give one Beep on a successful Power On Self Test (POST).
It may be that my laptop only beeps if it fails the POST. I hardly use my laptop this time of year.
When my desktop PC fails the POST you get a series of beeps like morse code. Long and short beeps in a pattern thats supposed to tell you what failed, RAM, Video etc.
Laptops are a PITA to trouble shoot as there isn't much you can remove or swap out. Hard drive and RAM are about it.
Do you know for a fact that the power supply works? Do any of the LEDs / indicator lights light up?

Yes, power supply works. There are four LEDs on the front and when it's charging, one comes on, but when I try to boot it, they all come on in little flashes and such, and I can put my ear to it and hear it running. I have to press and hold down the power button to get it to shut down.

So, at this point, I'm pretty sure the computer works, just not the video part. I believe it's totally out.

Edit: Also, the battery is fully charged.

Ok, it "usually" helps to know whats working and what's not.
I have 4 or 5 laptop power supplies in a box here someplace, they worked but the laptop didn't.
If the hard drive status LED is blinking it might actually be booting up, albeit to the Windows was not properly shut down screen, lol. You just can't see it. If it's not it likely isn't finishing the POST. If thats the case its a hardware issue likely with the Motherboard.
