Intel Graphics and Windows Display Settings - Different Main Displays?

so my office dual monitor pc setup has been up and running for years, with the "main display" (#1) always showing on the correct monitor, regardless if the other display (extended #2) is on, off, or set to different resolutions, it's always been rock solid, i.e. main display (#1) content always displays on the main display (#1), while extended display content (extended #2) always shows on the second display.

unfortunately things aren't running quite as smoothly on my new dual monitor setup, the extended display (#2) will often take over the main display (#1), depending on if if the second display is on, off, or set to a new resolution.

i noticed that with my new setup the intel graphics settings are different than the windows display settings - if i make display #1 the "main display" in the windows display settings it shows as display #2 in the intel graphics settings, and when i make display #1 the "main display" in the intel graphics settings it shows as display #2 in the windows display settings, weird.

i also noticed that the intel graphics on my new setup has more options under display than my old setup, including multiple display options (no doubt the drivers are newer on my new setup given the newer integrated graphics chip).

so i'm wondering, do the intel graphics settings override the windows display settings? the more i play around with the settings it appears that the prob may not exist if i ignore the windows display settings and just use the intel graphics settings?

I run triple displays. Changing which monitor is set as the Main Display has no effect on what number they are. Nothing changes in Settings > System > Display, number wise anyway.
The only way I can get the numbers to change is to physically change what port a monitor is plugged into on my video card.

    interesting....

for me selecting "make this my main display" in windows display settings determines which display is numbered 1 or 2, while selecting "primary display" in the intel graphics settings does the same.

anyway, seems that i've finally had luck getting the contents of display 1 and 2 to permanently stick to their respective monitors, as opposed to the contents of display 2 switching to display 1 (and the contents of display 1 switching to display 2) when display 2 is turned off.

prob is, when i now turn off display 2 all of the icons appearing on display 2 move over to display 1 for about a second, causing a jumbled icon mess on display 1, but then display 1 goes dark for a sec and when it turns back on all the display 2 icons are moved back to display 2 (which can be seen using remote desktop) and the display 1 icons are returned to their correct order.

just wish i could just get it to work like my old dual monitor setup, which works seamlessly and is rock solid, i.e. display 1 doesn't seem to care one iota about what happens to display 2,you can turn display 2 on or off, change its resolution, whatever, the contents of display 1 remain unchanged, unaffected.

For me, all three monitors are detected whether they are powered up or not. Even turned off Windows assumes they are there. So what I do when I want to game on only one monitor is press the Windows Logo key + P and select PC Screen Only. Only my number 1 display is on as its the one I set as my main display. Everything will open on that display when in that mode. Then when I'm done gaming I do + P and select Extend. Then I'm back to my multi monitor setup.
