My long-standing problem is windows both turning on and off at random

It is hard to work at a computer when every few seconds the screen turns off for a couple of seconds and then turns on again a minute or so later ... and repeats until half an hour or more when it settles down. I have tried everything, including downloading the latest Windows 10 home software (Version 10.0.16299 Build 16299,. The hardware is Dell Model XPS 2720 (all in one).

PLEASE HELP -- I AM GETTING READY TO SCRAP THIS MACHINE!

Yeah, the culprit is gaming HID device. In my case that is Logitech 3D extreme Joystick USB. If I disconnect screensaver and monitor off is working otherwise never switches off. It is a bug that needs attention from Microsoft as it is valid for all HID gaming devices.

No, not all HID gaming devices. I have a Logitech G27, an XBox controller, a Thrustmaster T-Rudder Pedals, Thrustmaster HOTAS Warthog joystick and throttle, and it is only the 2 HOTAS devices that cause this issue. If I unplug them and all the others are connected, then the display goes off. If I leave the HOTAS devices connected, the display won't go off.

I've got the same problem on a Supermicro SX10Ri motherboard, dual Xeon CPUs, 3 displays. Monitors never shut off. Not under Win 7. And now, not under a fresh new build of Win 10.

My other machine has a lot more USB and firewire devices attached and it's monitor shuts off after ten minutes. That machine has only two displays.

Both machines have the same make/model primary monitor. Both are running MSI 10-series GPUs. Both have Wacom tablets attached.

I always thought it might be server motherboard-related.

This is a significant bump, however thought it could help someone else with the same issue.

Been having the same problem for many months and I suspect it's related to the Windows 11 upgrade foisted on my machine. The culprit is a HID-Compliant vendor-defined device, in my case, NZXT's Kraken cooler (connected via internal USB header).
This had a hardware ID of HID\VID_1E71&PID_170E&REV_0200 under the details tab in Device Manager.

Disabling this pestilence has fixed my issue. (I don't use NZXT's garbage software either).

Under Human Interface Devices. If you don't have NZXT then you wouldn't have that device, but odds are it'll be something under that category (just go through, disable them all aside from KB/mouse) and try the monitor sleep utility.
