How can I disable 3D graphics acceleration in Windows 10?

Is it a hardware problem which has nothing to do with Windows? - Windows 10 Forums
Last month, in December, Windows 10 crashed my PC repeatedly. See the above thread for details.
Yesterday, I found that "3D graphics acceleration" was the culprit. However, I don't know how to disable it.
I have read this page and this page but still cannot find the "3D" option. Can anyone help?

As a process of trial and error, I am now using Windows 10 Version 1809 in VirtualBox on host Linux.
Linux does not crash my PC because it does not support 3D graphics acceleration.

    Hi there

    @Matthew Wai

depending on the graphics driver these settings are usually in the settings for the specific graphics card / driver.

    E.g for intel HD

AS for your Linux system -- it's the VM software rather than Linux -- in the VM config for VMWare workstation there's a checkbox for enable 3D graphics and hardware acceleration

    Thanks, jimbo45
I just found a better method below:
    How to Disable Hardware Acceleration in Windows 7, 8, 8.1 and 10 - Appuals.com

In Registry Editor, navigate to \HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Avalon.Graphics
On the right pane, add a new DWORD (32-bit) value named "DisableHWAcceleration", whose "Value data" should be set to "1" (="Disabled"). Then reboot the PC.

Is "hardware acceleration" the same thing as "3D graphics acceleration", the culprit in my case?

No, they are not same thing. Have to start with history of 3d acceleration. Once upon a time it was not present in graphic cards and than there were add-in 3d acceleration cards that took over 3D functions. Very soon they were incorporated in same card and even later in GPU (Graphic Processor Unit) single chip but they are still two separate processors. It's possible that one of them would work and another one to die.
Hardware acceleration is a bit of a misnomer and doesn't relate to GPU only but whole system. It also relates to 2D acceleration as well as CPU etc.
Although much simplified running "dxdiag" can tell you more of what is enabled and working.

See the attached "DxDiag.txt" file and the screenshot below.
In the Windows 10 Display settings in VirtualBox, "3D Acceleration" is not enabled.
However, "DxDiag" shows "Direct3D Acceleration" as "Enabled". Why?
Also, why are "Hardware Acceleration" and "2D Acceleration" absent from "DxDiag"?

Virtual Machine, virtual drivers, that looks completely different that real machine.

Assuming Windows is not in VirtualBox, if "DisableHWAcceleration" has been set in Registry Editor, should "3D Acceleration" have been disabled too? Does "DisableHWAcceleration" include "3D Acceleration"?

I don't think so, 3D Acceleration is purely HW, ie. GPU processor part, can't be disabled even in graphic card's BIOS. If it malfunctions even it's driver is disabled although 2D part might still work.

Do you mean 3D Acceleration can't possibly be disabled? In jimbo45's post #2 above, the "Intel HD Graphics Control Panel" screenshot shows the "3D" option. Can 3D be disabled there?

Even if it could, it's still not same thing as HW Acceleration. With video and stuff like that it's all 2D.
