I may have fixed the problem.
I ticked the box, and then restarted the game and low and behold it did not drop frames.
Then I closed the game, unticked the box, restarted the game and it seemed to be fine with it not selected, go figure.
I also tried with the windows 10 "game mode" feature turned on and off as well. Didn't make any difference I don't think.
