Running one monitor two machines

I am wonder ng what one can use if ever someone wanted to use two machines with one monitor is there a switch type hub that can take the input from either machine one or machine two and display the output on one monitor keeping in mind there is only one keyboard and one mouse.

I have seen on EBay such a device but it looks to have the older type USB inputs for the KB and mouse that are square instead of the more familiar USB 2.0.

The aim is to have both machines running and be able to switch/toggle between the two machines to the monitor when the set up is in a work space that only allows for one keyboard and mouse to be used. .

I had sen the HDMI ones but they are just a bit expensive to be honest I don't know why that should should a be a five time difference in the price so we wiil try the VGA one out.

If you only want to share the monitor you can ignore the keyboard mouse ports on the KVM switch. You don't have to use all the ports. You'll need a keyboard and mouse plugged into each PC. The original intent was to be able to use one monitor, mouse and keyboard with multiple PC's.

There is also another possibility (assuming your monitor has multiple inputs): connect one system via DVI and other via HDMI or VGA. Switching is done via "select source" button on monitor (my monitor has dedicated selector in front).

Sharing keyboard and mouse can be done via software. There are many solutions out there.

That would be awesome if you had a huge monitor. I would like to find a huge computer case that will hold 2 complete computers, that way I wouldn't have to keep up with 2 cases. There's one I want, but I can't afford it at the moment.

Thanks Andre yes nate we have the ports on the monitor and machines but the switches with HDMI for example are so expensive out here and thanks for that link too we will have a look at what it involves

Or use flat screen TV instead of a monitor. My TV in my bedroom has my XBOX on HDMI 2 and my cable box on HDMI 1. I switch sources with the TV remote. No second box needed. I think it also has a VGA in jack. I actually wish it had a third HDMI. I'd have one of my Raspberry Pi's plugged in if it did.

My suggestion was to switch inputs on monitor. No KVM.

If you only need to switch a single monitor between multiple HMDI cables [multiple computers] then you can use

In UK it now costs £8.88 [AU$16] but I can see that they charge AU$23. If you search for an alternative supplier be sure to check that the switch is a single-monitor, multiple-computer version not the other way around [i.e. not multiple -monitor, single-computer].

I use one of these and it's been fine [bought about 6 months ago]. There is one error in the UK description that might apply to yours aswell - it needs no power input and it has no power input connection.

For anybody else reading this post do note that switches for multiple HDMI monitors from single-computer HDMI cables are different even though they can look about the same.
