Just a further thought.
I wonder what will happen if I connect the monitor to the graphics card using display ports.
Or, connect the TV to the graphics card with a display port to HDMI cable and the monitor to the graphics card using a display port to display port cable.
Looks like time to buy more cables !!
On my Nvidia GT640, what monitor displays the BIOS menu depends on how many monitors are plugged in, and what ports they are plugged into. If I only plug 1 monitor in it shows the BIOS POST screen reguardless of what port is used. Plug a second monitor in and it depends on what ports are used. If I plug a monitor into one of the two DVI ports it gets the BIOS screen over the HDMI port. Use both DVI ports and DVI 1 gets the BIOS screen.
This all happens before the OS is booted so changing settings in Windows, even in the Nvidia Control Ceneter will have absolutly no effect. Its all a function of the Video cards firmware.
In my 3 monitor setup my POST screen displays on my right most monitor, that is connected to DVI 1. Once Windows loads the logon screen etc displays on my center monitor, which I have set as my main display.
You can't really control to which the BIOS should display in a multiple monitor setup, it will only display it in the first output the firmware tells it to.
In a single monitor setup however, you can make it show which ever output you use.
This is what I have noticed with both AMD and NVIDIA cards.
Finally got it sorted.
Connecting both the monitor and the TV using the display port sockets allows me to select which should be the primary monitor.
TV is connected using a standard HDMI cable and a display port/HDMI adapter.
It seems that any monitor/TV connected using the specific HDMI output socket results in that becoming the primary screen and automatically becomes monitor 1.
You can switch which monitor is Primary in Windows. I can set any one of my three as the Primary.
The numbers don't change though, and it has no effect on which monitor shows the BIOS POST screen.
The initial problem was that connecting the TV directly to the HDMI port resulted in the TV becoming the primary screen and this could not be changed.
It must be something in the graphics card that forces this to happen.
So the solution is:
Do not use the HDMI output socket.
