Dedicated GPU not recognized by Windows

A couple of days ago, I got a SMART hard disk error while my laptop booted. Yesterday, a repair man came down to my house to replace my HDD and installed Windows 10 Home using his own recovery media.

Today I booted up my laptop and downloaded most of the drivers without incident. However, for 'Display adapters', Windows is using Intel(R) HD Graphics 630 instead of NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 which was preinstalled on my laptop's motherboard, and which i was using before my laptop faced the SMART hard disk error. Instead, all I am shown is 'Microsoft Basic Display Adapter' with the yellow triangle warning icon. (See Screenshot (1).png)


Under device status, I have the following status:

This device is not working properly because Windows cannot load the drivers required for this device. (Code 31)

The driver trying to start is not the same as the driver for the POSTed display adapter.

When i attempt to update the driver, I get the message shown in Screenshot (2).png, which says that Windows found driver software for my device but encountered an error while trying to install it.

Could this be an issue with the Windows 10 recovery media that the repair guy used? Could I try and solve this problem by going into BIOS settings?

Any suggestions and assistance would be deeply appreciated.

I've tried to install the drivers from HP support. The thing is, my laptop doesn't detect NVIDIA at all. I don't have the NVIDIA control panel, so installing the NVIDIA drivers doesn't do anything because the laptop doesn't detect the NVIDIA hardware. I will try uninstalling Microsoft Basic Display Adapter and get back to you with what happens.

What is the exact model of your laptop? It will be on the label on the bottom of the laptop. There are actually two GPU's in this laptop if it has the HDMI port. Nvidia GeForce GTX 1050/Intel HD 630 GPU The display is the Intel, the external HDMI would be the NVIDIA. Make sure to allow for hidden devices in Device Manager to see if it shows the external GPU chipset. Also check your Bios settings.

The exact model is HP Pavilion Power 15-cb520tx. For BIOS settings, what exactly should I look for and change? Also, I performed a system reset on my laptop and the Microsoft Basic Display Adapter is gone and replaced with VGA Controller (VGA Compatible).

From what ive seen on dual graphics card systems, this appears, when the integrated Intel driver is misidentified and therefor not loaded, hense the generic MS is applied.
The follow on from this appears to be that the 2nd card does not or cannot use the generic as a base.

you need to get the intel driver on first.

The Generic MS is gone now after I did a system reset. Now it is just the Intel GPU and Video Controller (VGA Compatible), but still no sign of the NVIDIA GPU. Will I still need to make changes to the Intel GPU?

Did you try getting the drivers from the HP website? For both Intel and NVIDIA?

I downloaded the drivers. Intel is no problem because the Intel GPU which is inside the HDD is fully recognized by Windows. But there are no traces of NVIDIA which was installed on the motherboard, so I can't use the NVIDIA drivers because Windows doesn't even detect the NVIDIA hardware. The repair man from HP said it wasn't removed when he replaced my HDD.

I don't know whether the drivers for an Optimus setup are generic Intel and nVidia ones. I'd assume that they are customized, and that you'd have to get them from HP. https://support.hp.com/us-en/drivers...model/18863190
