Hi there. My laptop is dell xps 9550. It has 1 hdmi port that i currently use where i connect it from laptop to my samsung syncmaster monitor. It also has a thunderbolt port.

So i would get a thunderbolt to hdmi like this?

    https://www.amazon.com/AmazonBasics-...to%2Bhdmi&th=1

    https://www.amazon.com/AmazonBasics-...erbolt+to+hdmi
NO! Your computer has a Thunderbolt 3 port. The 3 is very significant.

Someone else on another forum said to get usb-c to hdmi

    So something like this?

    https://www.amazon.com/Cable-Matters...=usb-c+to+hdmi

    https://www.amazon.com/Adapter-MOKiN...=usb-c+to+hdmi

So im confused, are these different? The usb-c to hdmi and the thunderbolt to hdmi are different or the same?

Look closely at the Thunderbolt 3 port on your laptop. Which cable will fit in it?

Hi there thanks for that response.

So this one would work also?

    https://www.amazon.com/AmazonBasics-...to%2Bhdmi&th=1

The one you posted which is thunderbolt to hdmi.. it seems to be for macbook specifically? Or that doesn't matter?

I saw you posted i have thunderbolt 3... so that is specific? Thus i could use either usb-c to hdmi or thunderbolt 3 to hdmi but its preferred thunderbolt 3 because that is what my laptop has? Im just a bit confused here is thunderbolt 3 and usb-c the same thing?

And that is what the computer end of the adapter must be. Not just plain "thunderbolt" and not display port.

Hi there okay the thing is at the moment, i cannot order it off amazon.com because im not in the us at the moment. I would have to order it either from online where im where it doesn't have the same things as amazon.com at or go to computer shop... theres only 1 or maybe 2 places that might have this and not only are electronics expensive here, but many things are hard to find here for electronics. But i have to make sure that the cable is thunderbolt 3 right? Thus if it only says thunderbolt to hdmi... that would not work?

So if i find usb-c to hdmi cable here... that WON'T WORK either correct?

As I said, you need a usb-to-video adapter. You have to check what USB type your laptop has, and what video port your monitor can take. That is for you to answer, not me.

USB-C will work. Most of the adapters you will find will actually say Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C). Just plain USB-C is also 100% compatible with the Thunderbolt 3 port.

You are correct, you do not want an adapter that says just Thunderbolt without either the 3 or USB-C, though.

what is usb to video adapter? im confused here. So this is different from what the person above mentioned?

okay so in those links i posted, the ones that are usb-c to hdmi... those work right? And just to make sure of this, when i buy any of this, most don't include the hdmi cable so i have to buy another hdmi cable right? This is again all very new to me.
