Adding a monitor to my laptop causes display loss

I tried to add a monitor (Benq GL2460) to my Lenovo Yoga 310 (Win10) but when I connect it (HDMI cable), I lose the fill screen display and can't access anything (i.e when I try to open an application or service it won't display on my laptop screen or added monitor). When I unplug the HDMI cable the laptop returns to normal. Any ideas?

What mode are you in, Windows Logo Key + P, Extend, Duplicate etc?
    Typo, "fill screen display"?
What do you see on screen?

Notification Centre > Project > Select the required option there.
You may have it on Second Screen only. Change that to Duplicate for testing purposes.

I would also check the HDMI output specs of your Laptop, and the Monitor specs.

    Also go thru Windows settings:
Settings > System > Display > Multiple Displays.

Thanks everyone - yes typo (full screen). I have tried to select Extend and Duplicate but it doesn't save. I suspect it may be an HDMI connectivity issue as you suggest Helmut. I will investigate further.
