Poor 2D performance on new graphics cards

This bug all new AMD cards with RADEON Driver - from Catalyst v15.7 to RADEON Crimson v18.7.1 (all versions)

    Experiment #1:

RADEON R7 360 with "Standard VGA Graphics Adapter" (without Radeon driver)
    Desktop: FPS = 800-860
    Viewing the Spectrum foobar2000: FPS = 750-780
    Scaling in P-CAD: FPS = 700-800

    Normal 2D performance!

    Experiment #2:

    RADEON R7 360 with Radeon driver v18.7.1

    Desktop: FPS = 1280-1320
    Viewing the Spectrum foobar2000: FPS = 27-54
    Scaling in P-CAD: FPS = 10-1300

    Very low 2D performance!

    Video demonstration this problem:

    Hello.

Interesting find. What tool(s) are used for measuring FPS? I would like to measure this on my nVidia GTX 1070.
I have always had the feeling 2D performance is lackluster for newer Windows Operating Systems.

Problem is that 2D is locked to 400MHz in those cards and only BIOS (risky)modification can change it. In Rx 4xx/5xx those conditions don't exist.

    Hi folks
never been a fan of AMD graphics stuff - exception is if you have an AMD MOBO.

As CountMike says the AMD card(s) are hobbled so you won't get decent performance.

I'd always go for specialized NVIDIA graphics card fon a decent fast computer (minimal Intel 5 / 7 CPU) with INTEL MOBO. However that's my choice so if you want to stay with AMD then I think you'll have to get something a bit newer.

Interesting though -- INTEL seems it's going to enter the market moving away from integrated HD graphics, although for laptops to keep power down and avoid space limitations the INTEL integrated graphics usually work perfectly (not thinking about specialized / extreme gaming here though).

Compare 2D GDI performance - AMD OLD vs AMD NEW.

    Experiment 1.

    Old card PowerColor HD4670 (2009)+ Catalyst v13.9

    Experiment 2.

    New card ASUS Radeon R7 360 2G (2016) + Crimson v18.4.1

Resume: The old video card is faster.
    ABSURD!

This is the same for my GeForce GT 730 card and probably every modern 3D card out there. You get excellent 3D performance but bad 2D performance. Also, I don't know if the Github tool is reliable or not.

PS - Food for thought: If modern Operating Systems don't support old 2D acceleration capabilities anymore. Why is the MS basic display adapter a lot faster? It must be a driver issue then (AMD, nVidia). Is it not?

During 2Dgraphic test in Performance Test program GPU was running anywhere from 470 to1220MHz. Right now, sitting at almost idle runs at 214MHz. GRAM didn't change at all. (1500MHz ).

Compare 2D GDI performance - Discrette AMD vs Integrated INTEL.

Test #1: Discrette graphic card - Radeon R7 360. Very low performance

Test #2: Integrated CPU Intel i5-6500 - HD 530. Normal performance

    Resume:
Integrated CPU i5-6500 HD530 has higher 2D performance than the discrette Radeon R7 360.

    ==========================================================

    Test #3:
The performance of the GPU is enough!
The problem is the low reading from the Video Memory.
On the Display is lags! But on the Bandicam video is not lags!

People seem confused between Professional 2D/3D Graphics Cards, and Consumer Graphics Cards aimed at gaming and 3D effects.
Both Nvidia and AMD produce graphics chipsets optimised for both markets.

So what exactly is it with people doing pointless comparisons with gamer Graphics Cards which are not aimed at optimised 2D graphics.

Point is that normal, consumer GPUs are in greatest numbers and that their 2D performance is not up to par so they could sell expensive professional ones. At the beginning, there were 3D Accelerator cards to ad beside normal one that were 2D only, then they incorporated it on same card and in the end both processors are in same package (chip). It's manufacturer's decision what performance of each one should be.
