Microsoft basic display adapter not loading

I get the following error in device manager:

    Code:
This device is not working properly because Windows cannot load the drivers
required for this device. (Code 31)

The driver trying to start is not the same as the driver for the POSTed display
        adapter.
I'm confused as I have a NVIDIA GeForce GTX 660 running two monitors. The monitors seem to work fine. Why is the Microsoft basic display adapter being loaded in the first place (what's using it?) and how do I get it to work?

Is there a better forum to post this question on?

Hi rss81. Welcome to the TenForums @rss81

When did this start? Did you initiate any changes?

If you check Windows Update history what updates were installed around the time it started? In particular what drivers were installed (Bottom of page) ?

Open device manager, find device with the yellow triangle. Click on that device then right click and click properties.

Click on Details tab, using drop down box in Property box select Hardware id's. In the value box below copy and paste the first line into Google. What device is showing up.

Caledon, Thanks for your reply. Your questions are all good but unfortunately I have no idea when the problem started as it doesn't seem to affect the build. However, after clicking on 'Details' (not 'Display') I was able to find out the problem was with ASPEED WDDM and was able to download a driver from intel which solved the 'problem'. Thanks again for your help.

Great news. Sorry about the bad typo, not even close on "Details".

Glad it is fix and you could follow my poorly laid bread crumbs.

If you could mark thread solved it helps other to find solutions.

Remember Intel processors have integrated graphics even if you have a discrete graphics card. I have a Surface Book 2 with an Nvidia card but by default the computer came with Intel as the default card. Nvidia has a Nvidia Control Panel that allows me to change the default to the Nvidia or assign default for each application installed. Microsoft doesn't have a graphics card but they do update both through their monthly updates.
