    Display Arrangement Persistence

Where is the arrangement, scale, and layout of multi-display configurations persisted and what (Windows, device driver, etc.) is responsible for saving and restoring it?

I have a Dell Precision 5510 laptop that has Intel HD Graphics P630 and NVIDIA Quadro M1200 graphics running Windows Version 1803 (17134.165). Everything is up-to-date per Windows Update and Dell Command Update as well as right-clicking and selecting Update Driver in Device Manager.

I have a Dell WD15 USB-C dock both at home and at work. At home, I have a 1600x1200 Dell monitor located on the right side of my laptop connected via a mini display port to DVI adapter and DVI cable. At work, I have a 1920x1080 Dell monitor located on the left side of my laptop connected via HDMI.

Until recently, both of these configurations were remembered and all I had to do was to plugin the dock and all was well.

In the last few weeks, something changed and now when I come to work and plugin, the 1920x1080 monitor is layed out as 1600x1200 on the right. If I unplug and reconnect the HDMI cable from the dock, everything resets as desired to the appropriate layout and resolution.

Is this a core Windows problem? A device driver for one of the display adapters or dock? Is there persisted configuration somewhere I can view or reset to validate correctness?

Next time you go to work, do not connect / disconnect HDMI cable. Try this first:

1920x1080 is not listed as a valid resolution until I disconnect and reconnect the monitor. The resolutions are still from the other monitor with a max of 1600x1200.

    OK.

Windows should recognize (and remember) the individual display settings. Does Windows correctly identify the display, or does it show a generic display? If generic, try to find drivers for it from manufacturer's site.

Using the Advanced Display Settings, I noticed that when connecting to the dock at work, it still thinks I have the 1600x1200 monitor connected (Dell 2001FP). The act of disconnecting and reconnecting the HDMI cable causes it to recognize the different monitor and correctly change the layout and resolution as it was saved from the previous time it was connected.

I guess this means it is a dock (hardware and/or driver/firmware) issue and not a general Windows 10 issue?

Looks like I can disconnect the dock at one location before putting the computer to sleep which allows the original monitor to be disconnected and then when connecting the dock at the second location, the new devices are correctly recognized. At least I have a pattern that I can follow that is easier than re-configuring.
