Hello hkatlady, and welcome to Ten Forums.

Double check using the tutorial below to see if it may be able to help you set your monitor refresh rate to what it should be.

thanks. i keep getting an error message, but my refresh rate and resolution are the same as they were before my computer was "serviced".

it goes away by itself, but i can't click on it, close it or move it, but i can work on what's behind it. once i timed it and it took 50 seconds to go away. i use a resolution of 1152x864.

That looks like it could be a on screen message from the monitor itself instead of from Windows.

How do you have the monitor connected to the graphics card of your computer?

i wish i knew the smart way to answer that question. it's one of those cables that has a small number of pins and two places to screw the cable to the monitor so it doesn't fall out. can you envision that?

It says analogue so presumably a VGA sub D connection which usually does have two screws. That looks like a monitor message not Windows.
Set the monitor to what it says. It won't make much difference.
Check from the monitor specs what the panel resolution is, and set that in Windows. They are happy chappies with a native resolution.
