Viewing pictures and videos with Windows 10 1803...

I am not certain where this issue should be posted, mods please move it...

I have updated a Windows 7 PC after repairing some issues to Windows 10, version 1803, details here:

    https://www.sevenforums.com/windows-...ty-update.html

The system works for the most part, except when it comes to viewing pictures, videos and even some of the browser's configuration changes may trigger it as well.

Windows 10 default apps are set as:

Viewing pictures and videos with Windows 10 1803...-default_media_apps.jpg

Opening up JPEG images with Windows Photo Viewer may work for one, or couple of images just fine. Trying to open the first, or subsequent image, results in a blank screen of all different colors, gray black, green, etc. The system does not respond to mouse and/or keyboard activity, the only way to recover is to power off the system.

Viewing a video with the Windows Media Player is also an adventure, with choppy playback and video noise. Forwarding the video results in the same blank screen as with the pictures and the system needs to be powered off. The same video plays and forwards just fine on another system.

Changing the start up page in Opera browser triggers the same blank screen as above. The start up page can be selected and/or typed in, but once the "OK" is clicked, the the screen goes blank as above. Except the color is always gray. I did not try to change settings in other applications that seem to work just fine, became somewhat weary doing it...

The event viewer does not show errors related to this issue. Well, other than the usual "Unexpected shutdown..." error that is...

The system in question has an i5-2500K CPU, 8 GBs memory, Radeon HD 6800 PCI-e video card with latest drivers and couple of Samsung SSDs. The previous Windows 7 Professional, 64-bits OS had no issues like this one with Windows 10.

Is there an easy way to fix this issue? Well, other than rolling back to Windows 7 that is...

    TIA...

Hi, you say the video card is 6800 - there doesn't seem to be an exact match here:
    AMD Radeon™ 6000 Series Drivers

    - there's a 6850 for Win 10 x64

You may need to use an older graphics driver, assuming there's any correlation between that and the problem you are seeing.

Thanks... You are certainly on the right track...

It is an HD 6850 graphic card, sorry for not being specific. Both the 6850 and the 6870 card have the same drivers that had been installed on the system, with driver release date of 07.29.15.

Displaying multimedia did improve somewhat, it takes longer to have the blank screen and also introduced a new issue. Scrolling down with the mouse by moving the side bar in the browser causes the the screen to go blank. The system is not responding and has to be powered off.

Maybe the video card is just too old and "unofficially" no longer supported by the 1803 version?

    Thanks dalchina...

The system has a 650W SeaSonic power supply and the graphic card had been working just fine in Windows 7. In all fairness, it is about seven years old, but doubtful that it has issues.

The solution in the first link seems promising and will try it later today. Maybe the on board video had been enabled in the BIOS by Windows 10.

There's no indication in the event viewer about display/graphic issues, other than stated earlier...

    Update...

I've removed the video card in the OS, shutdown the system, blew out the dust including from the system, reset the video card and installed the non-whql AMD driver, dated 03.01.16. So far, non of the issues with the display showed up.

BTW... It's an HD 6870 video card, albeit it makes no difference. The legacy driver covers video cards from the HD 5000 to the R23x video cards from AMD.

    Thanks for your support dalchina...

Not all video cards are created equal, but sometimes age is better. I believe the video card in my system is at least 11 years old. Its an old GeForce GT 610. It has served me well.
