Startup Diagnostic Repair Loop After Nvidia Driver Update and Fresh In

Long story short: After a fresh windows install, whenever I try to use my GPU with a Nvidia driver (via GeForce or windows driver update), I get stuck in startup diagnostic loops.

    Rig
    CPU: i7 8770k
    GPU: 980TI
    Motherboard: Asus Z370-E
    RAM: DDR4 2x16G
    SSD: Samsung 840 Pro
    PSU: Corsair GS 700
    OS: Windows 10 64

Going to bed, my computer was working fine, no hardware or software updates to my knowledge. In the morning (04/06/2018) I booted up my PC and it went straight into diagnostic loops eventually leading to the blue restore and advanced options screen.
Reset a couple of times to no avail.

    Troubleshooting:
    - Initially, I did some googling following some youtube videos. In the end, I decided a full restore would be best. (Restore points, rollbacks and startup repairs didn't work).
    - After the restore, I installed manufacturers drivers for the Z370. However, after installing Nvidia, drivers, the PC force reset and went back into diagnostic loops.

    So..

    * Note: all other drives, CD tray and USBs are disconnected
    - I formatted and wiped the SSD
    - Reinstalled Windows 10 from an external drive
*Note: Remove my Razer keyboard as a popup bugged the install
    - Removed the 980TI in-turn to use integrated graphics.
    - Updated windows, installed Nvidia driver via GeForce
    - Mid install, Id get a force restart followed by diagnostic boot looping

    Next.

    - Installed drivers in safe mode successfully
    - Manual restart out of safe mode lead to diagnostic boot looping

    - Swapped out 980 ti for 970
    - Repeated the same process with the same outcome.
    - Tried older drivers around 388, same result.

So after a fresh install, whenever I try to use my GPU with a driver, I get stuck in diagnostic loops.
Integrated graphics is as stable I can get.

It's probably worth noting that I've had my board, CPU and memory for about 3 months
    SSD about 4 years.

Any insight is much appreciated. Thanks.

Hi Croftyness. Welcome to TenForums @Croftyness

Have you tried DDU. Boot to safe mode and run.

Then disable Windows from updating drivers.

    Option four of this tutorial.

Enable or Disable Driver Updates in Windows Update in Windows 10

Then manual install nvidia driver, an older one. Make sure GForce when installed is set to not update driver.

I would reseat power cable, both ends.

    Hello, thanks for your reply.
I used DDU in safe mode, disabling driver updates. Still same problem once the older driver was manually installed.
I also switched out my windows tools USB, tried one mem stick at a time and put the OS on another hard drive.
Is reseating just making sure everything is plugged correctly?
My GPU works when a driver isn't installed.

Yes reseating. Just want to make sure it was getting voltage it required.

Sorry what do you mean it works properly with no driver? Are you getting basic VGA?

    Have you tried another slot?

Correct, VGA works until I install a driver normal mode, search for hardware changes within devices menu or safe install drivers with a reboot.

    Tried another slot. Same issue.

I might check for a BIOS update or at a minimum reset your BIOS to defaults. Maybe something has become corrupt within it. You said this happens with different cards which I would think eliminates the cards. Leaves you with MB or windows.

Have you ever experimented with Ubuntu. Think you said you had a spare drive. Might be worth installing and seeing if you can get card running under it. If it fails I would think it is pointing to Motherboard. If it works then Windows.

Do you still have 1709 media?

I purchased a new motherboard and it works. Surprising as the one that failed was 3 months old. Any suggestions on the process of warranty returns?

They don't build like they use to.

    That is bad, really bad.

Each vendor has their own process but they all require RMA. Head to website, there should be links. Thanks for posting your solution.
