Refresh Rates. What is happening here ?

Long story cut short... I am having a play to try and resolve an issue with a specific program that I suspect could be graphics related.

I got curious on refresh rates and found various on-line checkers that are supposed to show actual rates on your PC.

Why does changing from 60Hz to 40Hz actually cause an increase in the displayed value ? If you look at the second image you can see I selected 40Hz on the graphics control panel (Intel Graphics)

40 Hz is probably below the specs for your monitor/screen.
My external monitor is fairly typical and the range of refresh rates is 50 Hz-75 Hz.
The internal Laptop screen is 59/60 Hz and that is all.

It won't like being fed 40 Hz. So it's probably autoing up to where it likes to be.

I would not mess with those settings leave it at 59/60 Hz. You won't resolve anything changing that.

I'm really just have a real play around at the moment and trying to get a handle on why a specific program crashes out when the screen layout changes as it runs. Its an electronic circuit simulation tool and so not something many on here will use (apart from one person I can think of) and so not something anyone can duplicate for me.

Thank goodness for disc imaging though as I can try all this stuff and then undo it all afterwards.

Well that query had just a smidgin of gamer geek about it.

Do you have a link to that software? Is it free or at least free to try? Are there any special specifications for it to run?

Have a read at this tutorial which I produced :) You might need to sign up to see the images.

I'm using LTSpice XVII which was the successor to LTIV, however basically the same to use and install and so on.

As to the problems, well I tried different graphics drivers and even the MS default one, all would crash at some point. Maybe the issue is elsewhere.

I contacted the 'author' of LTspice today over this and had it confirmed that this behaviour has been reported. Apparently the latest update of the program (14th May) may go some way to correcting this. I've installed the update and tried a few simulations in succession and so far so good.
