Windows 10: External monitor is not working with my Windows 10 laptop

External monitor is not working with my Windows 10 laptop

I have a small HP laptop with Windows 10. Everything works except I cannot get an external monitor to work. The external monitor used to work with this laptop. I know the external monitor and HDMI cable still work because I tried with a different computer.

With my Windows 10 laptop I go to Control Panel -> Display -> Screen Resolution. I see it sees a second monitor with or without the HDMI cable plugged in. My laptop has no VGA port.

When I try to extend the display when the HDMI cable is connected, I see "The display settings could not be saved. Please try a different combination of display settings."

I tried using Fn + F4. I tried using Windows button + P. I tried rebooting. I tried closing the lid of my laptop.

This laptop and external monitor combination used to work -- months ago. I have not applied any updates since then. I have not installed anything since then. The physical cable is the same. I do not know why it would stop working. I do not use this Windows 10 laptop on the internet.

In the Control Panel for Screen Resolution, there are drop down menus. Some of these values show the brand of the monitor when everything is working. With my Windows 10 laptop that does not have the external monitor working, the Screen Resolution drop down menus do not detect the monitor brand. With my Window computer that works with the external monitor, the brand name is detected and displayed in a drop down menu in the control panel. The non-working laptop refers to a VGA device in one of the values in a drop down menu.

How can I get my laptop to extend or project the display to an external monitor?

Hi MikeFox. Welcome to the TenForums @MikeFox

Can I ask what version / build of Windows 10 you are using? To get this ....

Windows key + R, type winver, enter

If indeed your computer detects a second screen when none is install it sound like your display adapter is trouble.

Have you tried updating the driver or rolling back the driver? For completeness what display adapter is your device using?

Can you also please confirm that Windows didn't install drivers for you. Will be found at the bottom of update history.

I had an error very similar to that years ago with my USB Display Link monitor on my laptop. It was basically a driver issue for me.

    Hi there

Try booting a bootable version of Macrium Free and see if anything appears on monitor.
If it does then you probably have some type of Windows driver problem.

Sometimes cables can become unplugged / loose / dirty. Try another cable if you have one.

    Cheers

I see build 10240. I have not updated the driver.

The display adapter mode is 1360 x 768 (32 bit) (60 Hz). The monitor, as the DirexX Diagnostic Tool shows, is a Generic PnP monitor. The main driver is igdumdim64.dll,igd10iumd64.dll,igd10 version 10.18.10.4276. The date is 10/2015. WHQL Logo'd: Yes. Driver Model: WDDM 1.3.

At the bottom of the "Update history" it just shows Updates were successfully installed on 10/2015. It does not tell me if Windows installed the drivers or not. This laptop and monitor combination used to work. No updates have been applied since it stopped working. I think this laptop has been this way since I bought it with Windows 10 installed.

The cable and monitor work fine with a different computer. It is an HDMI cable -- not a USB cable. Should I still try other suggestions like booting to Macrium?

Well you likely already know this, your Windows 10 is ancient history, the original released to public.

    Wow !!

No harm in trying Macrium. I would uninstall driver and let windows re-install. My thought is it will reset.

Any reason you are not keeping this device somewhat up to date? Looks like your are running 1507 and since then there was a 1607 and the 1703 and 1709. Tomorrow 1803 goes public through Windows Update. There have been countless fixes applied since 1507, won't argue the merits, many members have different experiences. 1507 and 1607 are no longer supported.
