A Restart and a Shutdown are different and it can depend on how you have configured your Shutdown, the latter is not really a Shutdown it's some sort hybrid state of Sleep and Hibernation, according to MS. If you want to know more go to MS.
You do get problems with Sleep and Hibernation due to low power states of hardware which is why a Restart is better.
People messing about with uninstallers, drivers etc can affect the system in odd ways. It's almost never a install the latest Nvidia driver scenario much loved by gamers.
Other system drivers rarely mentioned.
That's why a clean install works, it installs all system drivers that have been messed up. Makes allowances for aging hardware and so on.
Have used Nvidia Graphics Cards for 16 years and never used anything like DDU ever. Never need to re-install Windows for 4-5 years. Though obviously with Windows 10 it effectively does that every 6 mths with a major version install.

Take a read of this tutorial by Brink (Fast Startup)
I keep mine off and I have a very fast computer.
My thinking is but I can't prove it. Some times on Fast Startup some drivers don't get loaded completely at times.

Fast startup was disabled a long time ago and sleep etc. never used.The use of DDU and other apps were only used AFTER the problem occurred,as was the fiddling with drivers,cards and such.I strongly suspect,but cannot prove an update caused the issue.ALL original equipment is still in place and everything works normally.
A digital disaster,but not my finger.

Yes Jack,fast startup is checked frequently after an early update reset the damn thing without my realising it.The computer is homebuilt,2006 and has only had HDD's,fans and memory replaced.I subscribe to the "If it works,leave it alone" brigade,which is why the issue had me puzzled.Not knowing the cause is annoying.

Yes, sometimes updates and or upgrades do change settings. I really don't know why.
That is why I ask.
Best of my knowledge on a restart the drivers are already working.
On a cold boot the drivers have to be started from scratch and load.
By chance are you over clocked?
Does your old bios have a option of something like quick boot or fast boot? If it does I would not select either.
I really don't remember 775 socket bios.

No overclocking.
No BIOS options for booting.
The generic display adapter is loaded on every cold boot and the only info given for the nvidea card is"Error code 43",which is quite uninformative..

Another interesting side.I kept a cloned version of the original faulty system and recently tried it.Now on a cold start,in addition to the generic display adapter being used,I am now informed my password is incorrect.
A restart fixes everything.
Who needs road rage.
