Radeon Adrenalin - 100% GPU usage Bug in Windows 10

The new AMD Adrenalin driver package has a bug that I (and others) have encountered in Windows 10...

If you watch a YouTube video using Firefox Quantum you may find that GPU usage (as monitored in WattMan) gets locked at 100% and the GPU will not return to an idle state, even after quitting the browser. Needless to say, this will cause the GPU to draw more power and generate more heat. I've attached a screenshot of my own desktop showing the GPU locked to 100% even though there's nothing running to cause it. It will stay this way until you log out or restart the PC.

I've seen this bug in 17.12.1 and the newly released 17.12.2. I don't know if it occurs with other browsers and video playback portals but it can certainly be replicated with Firefox Quantum (v57) + YouTube.

If anyone out there sees the same issue please report it to AMD as it's more likely to get noticed and fixed.

This thread has several reports of the issue described above. Just search for the term '100%' and you'll find quite a few references to it with people responding to say they have the same issue...

Just an update to report that the bug described above still exists in the latest 18.1.1 Adrenalin update. I imagine there may be people out there who have this issue and don't necessarily realise that their idle temps are higher than normal. If you use the Adrenalin drivers and watch YouTube via Firefox then I recommend that you check your GPU stats via Wattman before and after watching a YouTube video. If your GPU usage is stuck at 100% then please report the issue to AMD (as I have done) and hopefully it will be addressed.

Nope here, working at 4%, do you maybe have that alpha version ? Official version is out.

I have the (just released) official version of 18.1.1 but I've also had the same problem with every Adrenalin release going back to 17.12.1.

I wonder if only certain cards are affected. From what I've seen online there are definite reports of this bug affecting some RX 480 and 580 cards, but I wouldn't be surprised if others are affected too. My card is a PowerColor Red Devil RX 480 running at stock speeds. It normally idles at 46C but that goes up by 10 degrees after this bug occurs and it will stay that way even after I close Firefox.

Since you're in a position to test for this bug yourself, would you mind trying again with YouTube in full screen mode? You also need to ensure that hardware acceleration is enabled in Firefox (which it should be by default). It may also make a difference if the video you're watching is SD or HD so I'd recommend trying both.

In my case the bug is reproducible every time and yet it does not occur with the older Crimson drivers.

    Thanks for your input.

Did you do clean install of latest version ? Maybe clean it up with DDU. Old settings can make a mess some times.

Yep, very thoroughly cleaned up. The bug even occurs on a fresh Windows installation so I believe I can rule out driver install/uninstall issues.

As previously mentioned, others have reported the 100% usage bug in this thread. Just do a text search for 100% and you'll see people reporting the same issue and others responding with the same problem...

The latest AMD Adrenalin driver release 18.2.1 still does not fix the bug.

The 100% GPU usage is definitely related to the AMD Relive: Host Application process (amddvr.exe). Even with AMD Relive disabled this process runs in the background and causes the 100% GPU usage bug after watching YouTube via Firefox in fullscreen mode. Manually killing the process will temporarily restore GPU clocks to normal.

Given how many online reports there are of this issue, I'm surprised and a little disappointed that it's not yet been addressed.

Oh well, I await the next driver and will keep this thread updated with my findings.
