It looks like it could be the shortcut arrow overlay icon that's messed up on them.

As a test, restore the default shortcut arrow to see if that may sort this part for you.

Hi Brink, OK the shortcut arrows are restored, but the document like overlay is still there. (screenshot).
During a restart the destop loads perfectly, but as the download progresses it develops the duplicates and
finishes with the icons stacked. Desktop shortcuts-image.png.

What is this toolbar at the top ? Do you have a 3rd party tool installed that you can disable ?

    Desktop shortcuts

I think I have found the cure. A forum answer involved a problem caused by down loading a duplicate background picture.I tried downloading a new picture - same scene but clean copy from my photo album.Hey presto it worked. I had to rearrange some icons, and on some the logo has gone replaced by a blank page.

    But that isn't a problem.
Many thanks guys for all the input, I hope the result will assist other members.

    Great news so far.

If you like, you might see if rebuilding the icon cache may sort out that last bit.

    Hello Brink,
I pressed solved so I don't know if you received last post.
It was just to say thanks, and that I am not going to tamper with any settings
as i am now quite happy that I no longer have duplicate icons.
    Regards,
    Romeo.

LOL! Sounds like a prank we (used to) pull in the office. Snapshot the desktop, set it as wallpaper, hide the icons. Within minutes the phone would be ringing. "Nothing on my screen works! Help!!" Barrel of laughs every time.
