Regarding this: Win 10 Home lacks features of Win 10 Pro.
What features of Pro do you need?
Are you in a business/corporate environment?
Need the ability to support large numbers of user accounts with a domain controller?
Need BitLocker?
Need Hyper-V?
I am somewhat in your situation, i'll give you my experience with pro and cons on win 10 pro, i also hope that more experienced user can give some advice on the cons to us, also i do not consider using workaraunds/tweakers cleaners, registry hacks that affect how windows is intended to work:
(I talk about windows 10 pro, i do not consider using win 10 home):
Pro
(better than win 7)
Nice desktop interface, workspaces/expo(?) mode
resizable command line (about time)
File History
Defender A.V.
Hardware support
Cumulative Updates
(better than Linux)
Vast range of applications that run in Windows, do not run on Linux.
Hardware support (on new machines)
Remote desktop
cons (worse than Linux)
Cumbersome exponentially increasing number of settings (and lack of documentation)
Lack of control on features upgrades
Slow, very slow or unbearably slow updates/upgrades
Telemetry (useless for normal users since you cannot control updates on telemetry results)
Troubleshooting nightmare, almost impossible for a normal user troubleshooting
"Random" Vanishing of files and folders
"Random" behaviours forcing to reinstall reset reimage etc.
"Random" reboots
Slow file system (ntfs vs ext4)
Useful features are removed with upgrades, uncertainty on what you can relay for the future upgrades
Too many feature combinations on the various win 10 iterations, an upgraded 1607 is different than a fresh 1607 istall making more difficoult/impossible to find information online
lack of windows 10 manual (?)
Advertaising features embedded in the system
Programs (apps) randomly install themself (sometimes they also disappears)
I would like to specify that i have no intention to spread false information, fake news, bashing windows 10, or windows in general
i've used it, i use it and i use "linux" and this is my honest user experience and comparison between the two OS.
I intentionally do not put a pro Linux section, to not give the impression that "linux will solve all your problems" it's a bit
more involving than that.

Thank you for the very informative reply, you have stated much better than I could, my own sentiments and experience regarding
Win. 10, 7 and Linux. If I could add one thing more, it would be that Windows 10 seems geared more toward the tablet market and
people who are avid users of social media, As such it comes with a lot of features that I don't need or want, it is also optimized for
online activity and many of the features don't work well with people like me with a limited internet service and metered connection.
The lions share of my computer use is offline, in the form of documents and photos.
If good third party photo editing software was available for Linux, it would serve my purpose. I do regret that I never went with Apple,
back when I started with computers.

i think you refer to me since i did the list, the intent was to talk about the OS per se not the whole ecosystem
and, i understand it's a corner case, i do not need the applications not supported ATM, but i understand your point.
Notice that also more major points for linux did not make the list, because the focus was on how they work, not the
ecosystem/advantages, like linux is free/open source you can install how many times you want etc.
i'll update the list, if you find other missing points let me know.

Abe I agree on the Windows Media not being able to watch DVD's like you can on 7, but problem with 7 I ran into a lot was CD Rom not recognized by Windows. I replaced the CD Rom twice, work fine for 3 months and back to Windows does not recognize it.
I am wondering if I will have that problem with this 10.
I do know that the CD Rom wont let me use my printer disk, I had to go to Canon website to install the driver for my Canon Pixma MG 2500 series printer.
I'll grant you Windows 8 was a weird departure from 7 with it's full screen metro interface...but "10" is not like that at all! The start menu is actually very nice to work with...what's the big deal...so you click on a "tile" to launch an app instead of a word like on the older versions of windows (actually the tile has the name as well)...I have home edition, and i don't feel like i am missing something major by not having Pro..
Windows 10 is the last version of windows and i think it's the BEST version that has ever come along...I used to try out each new version of windows and then hopped back to linux again (usually ubuntu or linux mint) but after installing10 i found i didn't need to go back to linux anymore because windows finally arrived (in my book...LOL)...
You should give it a fair chance...i think after you work with it for a while, you will find yourself liking it a LOT and you won't even miss not having 7 anymore...:)
Windows 10 is really a lot of fun to work with...i don't even miss not being on Ubuntu anymore....Plus: so many more programs and apps you just can't get on linux, unfortunately...
This is my Win 7 lappy, this ACER took some punishment from hitting the floor, and still boots up.
