OneDrive snatched 4 gigs of files from my desktop

I never signed up for it and tried to delete it originally and after clicking on "remove this computer" all files disappeared. I found many in my recycle bin so when I tried to restore them I guess they went somewhere because the icon in my system tray said they were downloading (to where?) What I am asking is how can I get my files back on my desktop and completely get rid of Onedrive. ? I thought they copied files, not make them disappear!

That would be because some changes were made to to Onedrive that includes that folder. You just have to go to your Microsoft Live account and then you can pull them back from the Cloud account.

Thanks, I spent many hours getting 99% of the 4 gigs back and 1 important file is missing still. They could at least warn you that they were going to obtain all your files. I really liked win 10 until now. I unlinked it and it looks like they still have copies for 30 more days. Now I know why people refrain from changing operating systems and now I know what those little circles with arrows in them were..........UGH
I would have an avatar in here but that was in a folder they LOST!

Actually it is if you still have access to that account. They should have never been allowed to be erased upon upload in the first place. Anything that is mirrored with your PC, is supposed to be mirrored on One Drive from those folders that are only allowed out of the box to sync. Never blame the software, always blame the human factor in these cases. It is the reason why I have never let Microsoft use any of their cloud programs for offline storage. I would not even trust Microsoft to care for our dogs.

I changed my One Drive to No Drive. Problem averted. I won't trust my files to rogue software.

    Some are missing

They didn't copy them, they took them away, they even took the link to my full control panel. I am missing a misc folder that is 15 years old and 2 other folders with pictures that were destined to another forum.

OneDrive robbed my files without warning!

I saw little circles with arrows in them next to my 4.3gb of files in folders and thought that was annoying until I opened one and it was empty, they were all empty and it was beyond annoying. Some were in my recycle bin so I tried to restore them but they went to the cloud. I tried to retrieve them but the instructions were vague (downloading often means uploading). I finally got them coming back to me and after 3+- hours 99% of them was on my desktop but my miscellaneous file I have been storing things in for 15 years was totally gone plus 2 or 3 other folders that had 10+- pictures in them. I disabled it (you can never totally get rid of it) and shut the computer down for the night so the little file snatchers wouldn't bother me. I did see all but the misc file folder but they were just empty folders, like a bank dumping your safe deposit contents into the garbage.......real safe storage.

If you want safe storage, invest into a good NAS. I have a Synology DS216+2 with two 1TB Enterprise drives in it, along with a 3TB external drive from Fantom, that is connected to my NAS with eSATA. We keep a copy of our stuff in a Family iCloud account, just so we have redundant backup. Some minor things are in Google's Drive space also.

The sad thing is that Microsoft does not care about the consumers anymore. It is Enterprise and Government that they will bend over backwards to appease.
