It'snot running as well as I would like right now. Even without the backup software running, Explorer is showing noticeable delays when I double-click, and often my double-clicks are ignored. There's still something causing a problem.

Macrium has an option to fix VSS problems...

Do you reckon it's safe to try this? I guess it will want me to reboot after it's done.

    Thanks again

Go in the advanced power options and uncheck the Fast Startup option, it uses a hybrid hibernation some hardware doesn't play well with. It caused problems on one of the machines here this morning that seemed not to be connected to the main problem but was resolved by turning off the Fast Startup.

Take a trace while Macrium is disabled...

Where do I find that option? My Power & Sleep options only offers me when to turn the screen off, and when the PC should sleep. I have additional power options, but that only shows me power plans. Changing the plan settings only gives the same two options (not sure what the point is, but that's another story).

I'm on Windows 10 if that makes any difference.

    Thanks

Macrium is still disabled. I made sure I wasn't running anything, then started the trace and clicked around in File Explorer. Most of my double-clicks were ignored first time, and I had to double-click again to get it to open the folder. Even when it did, there was a noticeable delay.

You can download the trace here.

    Thanks again.

By the way, what do you think about using the Macrium feature to fix VSS problems? Safe or not?

Look in additional or advanced power options for choose what the power button does, change options currently unavailable, uncheck fast startup, this could cause problems you don't need to fix, your programs may work correctly after a cold boot. The point is, your programs are trying to start up from info saved when you shut down, this could be causing program data to not load. I have seen this on multiple machines, just try it, if it doesn't help nothing lost or gained...

In this trace, there is no High Disk activity due to VSS, but a high CPU I/O. I think this is another problem...

Question before I continue; Is explorer the only thing that hangs or any other program ?

I found that the High CPU usage is caused by QTTBar, as I told you earlier. When I look to your version it's 2.0 ! it's too old (2011)

I've the 1038.0.0.0 version on my computer !

check that by going to C:\Windows\assembly\ and search for "QTTabBar.ni.dll". in the file's properties, details table you'll find the file version.

    Install a newer version.

    zinou,

Interesting, I checked the QTTBar site and found the same version as I have. I then did a search for QTTBar and found that there is a completely separate version of it, which is the one you have. I've uninstalled the old and installed the new, so will see if that helps.

    Thanks
