I agree that the underline is jarring, but I'm guessing that's only because it's new and I'm not used to it. I do think it is necessary now that the shading of the entire background of the icon is not contrasting much with the rest of the taskbar. Without the underline it would be tricky to determine with a glance which apps are open.

    Yes, they were.
Maybe you didn't have any programs open or your monitor settings obscured them.

I'm easily annoyed at these Microsoft interferences, so I feel your pain, but this is one I actually like.

They're there for a reason, it's pretty simple. Same as the box used to show around opened programs in previous versions of Windows.

Well if like me you use the taskbar with no grouping and no applications pinned, then that underlining forced option is ridiculous.
I hope someone will find a way to disable it.

I prefer this to having the whole icon lit up aka 7 ... though if the active window it will highlight with the bar to show open ...

With the applications boxes being the same colour as the taskbar, it would be difficult to see what is there as they don't really stand out unless either highlight or with the underline, The text is a big give away but it's not exactly saying look at me I'm open here.

Honestly I hadn't really noticed it and now I do notice it more but well..I kinda like it, Hope you find the solution you are looking for though.
