If you upgrade to 10 from your activated 7 using step 2 below with the Media Creation Tool, it be activated afterwards. If not, then give it a couple of days since MS activation servers are under heavy load right now. :)

Wanted to say that I'm experiencing the same issue.
First, I thought that using the Media Creation Tool to download the Windows 10 ISO made the Windows 10 icon in the taskbar disappear. But when I checked another laptop, it didn't have the Windows 10 icon either while I didn't use the Media Creation Tool on there. Both of the devices show on Windows Update that I've reserved Windows 10 but the link to "Learn more" on there doesn't work.
Me too, exactly this, and it sounds like it's happening to lots of people. I didn't have any files downloaded, though, as far as I can tell. Not sure whether it will tell us to upgrade eventually, or whether after the furor dies down we'll just use the Media Creation Tool (which I downloaded).
Scrounging around the internet about this yesterday, I found out that there is a Microsoft User Experience area in the registry, and mine has a sub-key called 'Reduced' with my upgrade status=Green down there. That makes it sound like although all compatibility checks passed, somehow the great MS in the sky decided my laptop was sub-optimum somehow and pushed me to the back of some queue? I have never understood the user experience thing, my laptop runs fine but my number is always around 5 - I have 12gb of RAM but a slow disk drive evidently...
The GWX icon returned to my system tray last night w/o me doing anything. It just reappeared. However when I go into Windows Update it no longer says Windows 10 is reserved. It just has the regular "You are set to automatically download updates" w/ no mention of Windows 10 anywhere on that screen. The GWX app does say it's reserved but the files have not downloaded again. Originally the files were downloaded but disappeared when the icon disappeared from the system tray. I wonder if MS will incorporate last minute bug fixes & updates into the files they push for the upgrade or just leave those for subsequent windows updates.
It came back for me, too. Not sure what, if anything, of all the fooling around I did yesterday may or may not have had anything to do with it.
Same for me. The icon came back spontaneously without me doing anything but Windows Update doesn't say anything about having Windows 10 reserved. I do have 2 folders though in the C:/ drive; Windows~BT and Windows~WS. I can see that the Windows~BT is getting bigger in size so I think it's downloading atm.
