Computer booting to black screen after login.

    Hi,

My computer recently seems to be having some issue where after I logged in, sometimes it will boot to a black screen with only a cursor. I can't seem to open task manager through ctrl+alt+delete as it doesn't respond. The only way that I can boot back into the desktop is either force-restarting the computer, or pressing the sleep button, on my com, wait for a few minutes to let the com sleep, and then wake the com up again then i'm presented with the desktop.
I have checked the event logs on my PC and they don't seem to report any error.
    Please advice.

    Thanks

    Hi fuzeee.

Next time you get into Windows I would like you to shut of hibernation so it will disable Windows Fast Startup.

Right click start, then either command prompt(admin) or PowerShell(admin), enter the command

    powercfg -h off

Then try powering down and powering on. Did this change behaviour?

    Hi,

I will give it a try and report back, as it only happens occasionally. Usually it happens when I bring my laptop to school. I suspect it has something to do with my display drivers as when I'm at home, i use an external monitor.

The way I read your problem, and I cold have misinterpreted, this happens at power on. The solution I provided is to address one element of power on, that being Windows Fast Startup.

Lets see what happens. Agree it could be video.

I've just had a similar problem where the PC would load the BIOS screen but failed to boot into Windows just showing a black screen. The problem was a bust AMD graphics card which I spotted by noticing display artefacts on the BIOS screen. In my case I just removed the graphics card and used the onboard GPU. All is now fine with a new graphics card.

I see you have a laptop so fixing a bust GPU will not be straightforward and expensive if that's the problem.

Could be just bad GPU driver. During first part of BOOT process only basic drivers are loaded and when it comes to full drivers to work, they don't. Happened to me many times when windows installed wrong drivers or they rent bad. Could be fixed in safe mode.

This is a log collector that we use in the bsod forum. It will collect event.vwr, bsod, msinfo32, dxdiag, drivers, etc.
Please run the DM log collector and post a zip into the thread and we will troubleshoot the files.

    Hi,
My apologies for the late replies. Have been busy with school work :P.
It happened again and I realized that after I unchecked fast-startup last friday, I forgot to save changes.

I will run the DM log collector tonight and also uncheck fast-startup.

What happens when you right click on the desktop?

if you get a context menu then your desktop is on the other display which can't be seen because of the lack of a monitor. This is not exactly an uncommon occurrence.
