If you sort processes in Task Manager by Disk usage, which are on top?

And, btw, your HDD is 7200 rpm (Seagate 2TB BarraCuda) and should do well, if you can't afford SSD.
AH! I think I know who the little ******* is! Firefox with 1,2 GB.

To the list of things like indexing that may need updating after an upgrade, there's also application compatibility testing. I've traced unexpectedly high disk activity to this in the past. If leaving the PC on for an hour or so doesn't end the activity, only then would I be concerned. There's a lot of housekeeping that needs to be done after an upgrade, apparently.
I think so, but it's getting less and less and less here :) Good sign!

This is memory usage. Not much to do with disk usage, especially at Windows start.

Upper graph is showing percentage of disk in use. Graph below is showing transfer rate. Upper percentage isn't showing percentage of maximum transfer rate. It could show 100% with transfer rate only 1 MB/s.

Check HDtune data in pictures below

One thing that crossed my mind with this is could the unseen culprit be related to swap disk memory. Depending on how much ram is installed some fine tuning here may help - limiting the swap disk size could control disk overhead, as some processes for some reason seem to use it by default even if RAM is free

Uninstall the store Skype app even if you don't use it.

    Honestly.

I'm not sure what it does or why but it destroys disk usage after restart (only noticeable on my old machines).

I use the old Win32 Classic Version of Skype which is OK and doesn't have this issue.
