Executive decision made :) As I run an SSD I'm going to go with turning off Fast Start. Boot times are only around 6 or 7 seconds longer, and in many ways it makes more sense (to me) to have the system fully shutdown each time rather than wonder whether everything is behaving itself (drivers unloading and so on) when using fast start.
The curiosity as to 'why' FCU has behaved liked this remains however, particularly as all previous versions of W10 (for me at least) did not seem to show these differences in which method you chose to shutdown. Maybe a different driver has been installed... quite likely actually... but I'm just guessing on that, and whether that could have an effect. The W8.1 tutorial suggests what I observed is normal. In any event I don't think there is any inherent issue or problem, it just is the way it is.
