Well, I have not been offerred 1709 yet and it may be the first option to try.
I have a digital license but how can I force 1709?
I will do an image first. Will it break Office? And, will I get an option to create media? I ask as I do not have a Windows 10 DVD as I got free upgrades from 8 or 8.1.
Since you upgraded from windows 8 or 8.1 to windows 10 you have a digital license.
There are several methods to upgrade:
1) In the left lower corner search type: windows update > open windows update settings > check for updates > this may automatically find the updates and upgrade to widows 10 version 1709.
2) In case it does not you can upgrade using the Microsoft website.
Download Windows 10
3) you do not need to create a windows 10 iso to upgrade but having a windows 10 iso is another method.
A windows 10 iso is useful if you have operating system problems that are not fixed by sfc scannow or dism restorehealth.
4) Before upgrading create a brand new restore point.
How has the computer performed in clean boot?
What were the results of the sfc scannow and dism restorehealth? Please post the results into the thread.
Open administrative command prompt and type or copy and paste:
1) sfc /scannow
2) dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth
3) chkdsk /scan
When these have completed > right click on the top bar or title bar of the administrative command prompt box > left click on edit then select all > right click on the top bar again > left click on edit then copy > paste into the thread
There is a pro and con of doing the upgrade first.
Currently you are having problems that could be fixed by the upgrade if the problem is the operating system.
There are people that are having problems with upgrades so it can add another layer of complexity.
So first lets see what happens with clean boot for a few days and then safe mode with networking.
And lets see the results of checking the operating system integrity with the sfc and dism commands.
If there is conflicting software that will need to be addressed.
If there is/are hardware/firmware issues they will need to be addressed.
And if there is/are operating system problems that can be fixed with an upgrade.
Well, I know it has been a while but I am going to try the suggestions about clean booting. However, my msconfig already says selective startup...in fact all my systems do. I also notice that when I boot after powering on in the morning, it can take 15 seconds or so before the Windows Key will do anything! It the system is on for several hours, I can tell it to shutdown and it will. The fans go off and the system shuts down...and then in 10 seconds or so it restarts!
I still hope and think this is software or some driver that got loaded as it does not seem loke a powersupply or MoBo issue...YET!
If it's powering up 10 seconds after powering off, it must be in sleep or hibernate? Fast Startup is enabled for instance. Or your case power up or reset button is defective? If its actually fully powered down, no OS is loaded, its BIOS functions only. The only way it can boot up from a full shut down is with the case power button. If its in a sleep or hibernate state other things can trigger a boot up. Mouse or keyboard activity etc. It's still a BIOS function though, as far as I know. Drivers have no bearing on this.
Windows Fast Start Up, Turn On or Off Fast Startup in Windows 10 Not the BIOS Fast Boot. It's a hybrid sleep mode, that can cause issues when it doesn't work right.
