I meant unreliable if windows is left to do it's own thing. I know that you use Sharks codec pack. In the past I've used MediaPreview and currently have LAV Filters installed along with other codecs.
    Take care!

stopping those tasks, deleting them and stopping in registry and deleting them will still not stop the thumbnail caches from being deleted. GUARANTEED. Only my methods works for a fact. Maybe a 3rd party thumbnail back up program a couple mentioned, but we will wait until windows deletes it and if this program will restore it back. It might, but I think the previews will still have to reload again in explorer, if this is the case, then the program is useless. Except for maybe being a previewer like Icaros is to give you nice cool thumbnails for audio and video files. Windows has its own thumbnailing for photo files.

and 2 links above for digicam and wildbit are for photos. Icaros is for audio and video file thumbnailing images.

I presume this is still an issue in the latest 1809 feature update? Has anyone noticed, I suppose it's too new for this to start showing itself yet. I did the DWORD regedits just in case changing from 3 to 0.

Nope not an issue anymore, well for me anyway.

Good to know. I did those reg edits just in case anyway as I hated that MS thought cleaning the thumbnail cache was what people wanted. From memory it’s best to give it over 24 hours and then give pc some idle time to see if it does it

Sorry just to clarify, for me it fixed itself sometime before the 1809 update, of course the 1809 update does as you say reset the thumbnail cache as this seems to be the usual practice now for a major update, but i've not had the corruption or the constant refresh malarky happen again afterwards.

Ah I see , I wonder if I should it change it back to DWORD with value of 3? It’s funny because I always thought it was DWORD 1 or 0. On or off. I wonder what 3 means and whether my changing the value to 0 does any harm or not? Does anyone know what the values mean for the DWORD?

I'm not sure what it could mean, but I've ran the automatic maintenance service and it didn't clear the thumbnails cache like it did at first, so I guess it was fixed, then. Also after this new 1809 update my memory usage has gone from 7% at start up to 21% now with 16 GB of RAM.

Ok thanks. I guess I should put that Regedit back. Out of interest what does your registry key show for the autoruns DWORD. Is it now 3?
