    I think I found another solution, actually it's unnecessary to completely disable Automatic Maintenance with the FreeBooter script (post #7). I identified the culprit, it's "SilentCleanup" in Windows Task Scheduler (Microsoft / Windows / DiskCleanup). This task seems crappy, when you manually launch it you'll see your thumbnails disappear. Obviously, we could eventually disable this task but it's not the best setting because we disable all other automatic cleaning tasks (temporary installation files, downloaded program files, Windows updates, memory dump files, etc.).The smartest setting IMHO, it's to disable only the part managing the automatic cleaning of thumbnails cache.

    To do that, run Regedit.exe and browse the following path:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\VolumeCaches\Thumbnail Cache

    Modify Autoruns DWORD and set its value to 0 and reboot your computer.

    Now Automatic Maintenance should no longer delete your thumbnails.

    I applied this change 2 days ago and I have no problem since.

    Let me know it worked for you, otherwise I'll try to find another fix.

    I hope this will help you.
    Thank you!

    Hi. I found this thread yesterday and applied the DWORD suggestion on my desktop PC. Now when I check task scheduler, I am seeing the operator or admin has refused the request under disk cleanup, see attached image. With DWORD set to default, it says operation has completed successfully. Can anyone who applied the DWORD suggestion confirm this?
    Yup, I'm seeing the same as in your post #62. . .

    It's the same issue, its not fixed by the reg hack, icon and/or thumbnail cache is either corrupt or cannot be refreshed properly. Do what I did, create a new folder and copy everything from the original to the new, delete the old, rename the new to the same or whatever. Open all the new folders/sub folders that have pics/media and the thumbnails will be rebuilt and should display properly thereafter.

    You might want to try the TICR utility to wipe all the caches completely beforehand too, but then you have to rebuild all of your thumbnails obviously.

    I've also seen explorer struggle or bug out in 1709 when it came across video files which it didn't recognize/couldn't play with its native video player, i.e it didn't recognize the codec(s) they were created with. Before in previous builds you would just get no thumbnail for those types of files, for me it made explorer crap itself in 1709. Well until recently where I seem to have fixed it as per my previous post. Still not had anymore issues in explorer since :)

    Not 1 of the tutorials you read anywhere will stop Windows 10 from deleting your thumbnail cache. But I have found the factual way to stop this from happening. Go to this link. It will fix it and stop the thumbnail cache from being deleted, guaranteed.

    Exactly, i noticed some of my pic caches/folder thumbnails were still rebuilding, aha! so theres 2 keys, i only had the 1st one turned off as mentioned in the thread.

    This is the other reg key;
    Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\WOW6432Node\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\VolumeCaches\Thumbnail Cache

    Mines not fixed with that reg hack. Something else is up, but it definitely still relates to the thumbnail cache.
    This does 100% fix it for sure on Windows 10. You have to change both registry entries to "0". You may have a corrupt Icon and Thumbnail cache . Go here and download the file to rebuild them and then see.
