As previously discussed Open and Use Disk Cleanup in Windows 10 Performance Maintenance Tutorials

Bitdefender shouldn't be causing such issues unless there were processes pending in the background.

Use windows defender for now and stay away from dodgy websites.

Don't forget to tick all the boxes on disk clean up you'll appreciate it.

Okay this is where I'm at. I was going to earlier when I was doing the clean Boot and the uninstalls and I thought just for the heck of it to uninstall bitdefender. It was still giving me trouble after that so that's why I kept reposting. I think it was you that told me to uninstall any third party antiviruses so I uninstalled what I had left over and that was Malwarebytes. It appears that that was the culprit. I've restarted three or four times and so far the start menu comes right up. I turned on Windows Defender just so I had something to protect me but if I could be so bold and ask what the hell do you do for an antivirus a good one? Bitdefender has always been my go-to. Should I try to reinstall that or should I just stick with Windows Defender?

I have been having the same exact problem that you mentioned in the OP. Have you had it happen to you since uninstalling Bitdefender?

I am currently using Avast antivirus and the problem has been happening to me as well on and off (I have to restart or log out to get the start menu and other Windows services to work). Maybe Windows 10 isn't playing nicely with third party AV programs.

I am running a system with an AMD CPU and an AMD GPU so at first I thought it might be some kind of issue with chipset drivers or graphics drivers but it happens even when installing various versions of drivers. I did a clean install of Win 10 and the problem disappeared for a few days and then returned.

I will try uninstalling Avast and see if it works for me.

Hi Acorn. I was running BD as an AV and MalwareBytes for any extra malware probs. First I uninstalled BD only and the problem was still there. I then took out Malwarebytes and my start menu worked like it's supposed to. Waited 1 day and Brink told me to try BD again and see if it was ok and sure enough, everything is fine. Now I am running Windows Defender and Bitdefender Anti Virus Plus 2018 and everything works like it's supposed to. Good luck...

I can only tell you what works for me. I went through all the clean install and all that good stuff and the only thing that worked was taking out a third-party antivirus if you have any kind of security stuff installed get rid of it and see if you still have the problem. I know mine was Malwarebytes that was stopping the start menu from popping up. Once I uninstalled Malwarebytes start menu came up no problem one of my posters on here told me to reinstall bitdefender to see if it would work and it did. So now I have Windows Defender and bitdefender.

You could actually try a reinstall of malwarebytes as well. I run MBAM and so far have only ran across this issue once on my new rig during a stress test I manually ran of shut downs and restarts. I’m curious to see if your issue returns with the installation of MBAM but that is entirely up to you if you want to reinstall it.

I was running the pro version of mbam. With the protection and everything else. I think a lot of people run mbam without the real-time protection and don't have a problem. I may try a reinstall but basically bitdefender by itself is pretty safe. I only ran and Bam because I had bought it a lot of years back and it's a lifetime membership so at that time I mean. I didn't have to renew it or anything like that so might as well use it if I had it. I think Windows Defender has also gotten a little bit better too. A lot of people run that just by itself. I happen to like bitdefender a lot just the antivirus.

Yeah I know what you mean. I’m keeping everything I have installed for now since I’ve only incountered the issue once. My MBAM is the pro version as well and has everything turned on including real time protection.

A few days ago I uninstalled Avast and Malwarebytes, and then re-installed Avast. For a few days the system worked fine without the start menu problem showing up.

Today the problem happened again so I really don't know what is causing it.

You can try some of the troubleshooting tips that were posted earlier in this thread. Other than that I can't think of anything else. It seems as though Windows 10 and the last big update had some issues with 3rd party apps. Especially AV's and anti-Malware apps.
