    Me too.

Even #1. I mean, a Windows update should never assign a drive letter to a system partition.

    Here is a fellow traveler:

    Does the Cortana worked?

Please open the Command Prompt as a administrator and type following commands one at time:

    Code:
    Sfc / Scannow

    Dism /Online /cleanup-image /restorehealth

It isn't that I think. I stripped my CU system pretty much bare (except for photoshop and other no-startup items) and it still had the dame issue. I can elaborate on the issues I had (maybe they are related).

    1. After the update, my EFI system partition was assigned a drive letter. This was visible in My Computer and diskpart but not disk management . If I unassigned it via diskpart, it would show up the next reboot. I had to use partitionmagic to get rid of it. I don't know if this wwas related to the start menu hang.
    2. When the start menu hung, I could often log out and log back in and it would work until the next reboot.
    3. It was not just start menu, but Cortana and Edge. I could start up firefox and thunderbird fine.
    4. It didn't make a difference whether fast startup was enabled or not.
    5. I would see apparently related errors in the system log: The program ShellExperienceHost.exe version 10.0.16299.15 stopped interacting with Windows and was closed.
    6. When I restarted, I would get the prompt "Task Host is stopping background tasks (Microsoft \ Windows \ Plug and Play \ Device Install Reboot Required". This even though all devices had been detected and their driver version checked for updates.

I tried paring everything down to generic Microsoft drivers and no startup third-party items and redoing the upgrade. That is tiring, didn't pay off.
After the upgrade I made a backup of it and used it to try uninstalling practically everything and different setting (e.g. fast boot). I actually got it to exhibit this behavior every other boot this way.
I made an account on this forum just to say I have the EXACT same symptoms every single one. Frustrating as hell. I am wondering if it's a driver issue but the fact that we keep getting a Z drive makes me think it is something else.

    Hello @LinkinForcer, :)

You might see if re-registering the Start menu may help for it.

As an update for this thread. A complete wipe and install from ISO fixed my issues. It's extremely sad that this has to be done considering updates like this come out twice a year...
