If you don't have working computer where you can create KNOPPIX bootable media then your only option is to use the Windows 10 Installation Media.

You can connect external drive and from Command Prompt use Dir command to find your personal files and use copy command to transfer your personal files to external connected drive.

You can use Dir /? command to view Dir document same goes for Copy /? command

Its a Satellite A505, originally came with Win 7. Its about 10 years old. Upgraded to Win 10 last fall. Win 10 did an autoupdate in May and the drivers went syraight to hell - maybe even erased. Hasn't worked since. I've been writing a book and all of my files are on this computer. Like an idiot, though, I've never backed the system up. There is a system restore point in May, but for some reason trying to restore always fails, probably because the drivers are gone. I can't boot in safe mode - I just get the black screen of death.

I do have a Windows 10 auto driver installation CD, but the computer refuses to acknowledge it - saying the disk isnt compatible with this version of Windows.

I can't do a reset, the damn thing won't allow me to do it.

This is where I am at.

    Hi,
Don't let autorun open the disk
Open and view and right click the setup.exe and go to properties and use compatibility mode on it for win-7 or vista or even x-p to see if that will work.

Windows will not open. I can't even get to the password sign in. Anything I do, I'll have to do from command prompt

Had waited over an hour and there was no reply.
Are you available now for troubleshooting?
