    Thanks again @LEOPEVA64,

    Result!

That info is also given on page 14 of that lengthy thread, meanwhile on page 13 was this gem...

Even better than that - after scouring the menus etc. for an option for this, I thought I'd give the 'Get Help' option a try and was put through to Microsoft's Live Help.

The guy spent over an hour with remote assistance on my PC - running through various utilities (e.g. DISM) before finally getting me to do a full repair installation (a 4GB download over my metered connection).

Apparently they weren't even aware of it and at the time I couldn't find any information that this was a 'feature'.

Yes, I read all the answers in that thread, every time someone answers I immediately get the notification of the mail app.

Well, we just have to wait for 1803 now, whatever that's going to be called ('Spring Surprise'?)...

What a load of total rubbish, There is one H*%^$ of a difference in having a an upgrade automatically continue as the user can set and forget and move on to other tasks, ( not necessarily computer tasks), and auto restart of running apps after reboot This restart of apps is likely to be only some of those running when the system is rebooted, due to most developers ignoring the setting, and is a totally different issue and has to have it's own controls.

    Annoying aspects of this "feature":

    • You can't turn it off
    • It's inconsistent - some apps restart and others don't
    • It takes longer to restart apps after boot than it does for me to do it manually - I've often opened the apps I want by the time it loads them and then get window duplication interrupting what I've started doing.

Wish this could have been designed more thoughtfully...

Here's something you all can try. Hope it helps. Been subscribed to this MS Community thread and getting too many emails. Too many whiners. This fellow on the last post of this page may have a solution, or at least a workaround:

Programs autostart after boot in Windows 10 Fall Creators Update - Microsoft Community

    He refers to this tutorial:

boot - After Windows 10 Fall Creators Update recent used app will launch on startup - Super User
